Went for the first time this year even though half the lake is still frozen over. Being on the water and breathing in air that dosent make your lungs want to bleed sure feels wonderful. Anybody got kayaks, canoes or boats?
i don't own one, but i do like going canoeing on the river. it's just getting to be nice weather here, so i haven't went yet this season. i went a couple times last fall. we used to canoe more often when i lived back in my hometown. we would rent a canoe and float down the river with a bunch of beers and a little weed. where i live now, there is a rental place right on the river. they don't allow you to bring beer, but i'm about 99% sure i could get away with it if i wanted to. there's a river regatta where i'm from too, but i've never participated.
My dads got a sea kayak that I take out every now and then - great fun. Go for a paddle to the sea through the marina, and then around the point and then spend half an hour playing in the waves on the way back. Not so many lakes around here, but the sea works for me.. but there is something incredible about that lakey-stillness that you don't get offshore.
interesting that you say that, mushroom. i've never known anyone to live near the ocean and be jealous of a lake i grew up around lakes, ponds, streams, rivers...but no ocean. waves are rare thing for me to experience. i have a bicycle too, bird. two of them actually. but i don't think they would do so well on a body of water. no matter how fast you peddle.
I love the silence of lakes, it's a whole different atmosphere. I probably prefer the sea for it's umm.. "versatility" and rhythmic calming. It's like being rocked to sleep, but they're very different. The sea definitely doesn't get any points for reflections, unlike lakes which score very highly in that regard And rivers.. gimme a river any day of the week. Saying all of this, it's made me realise I do actually have a combination of all 3.. cos they open the marina up into the sea to flush it out every now and then - which creates some form of current near the mouth.. then there's obviously the sea, and when the wind's not blowing we get some pretty badass reflections.. I have a pic I shall post actually. But.. the wind hardly ever stops blowing here, and it's not exactly a gentle wind. It's a hardcore 2 strokes forward 5 strokes back kind of wind if you're paddling directly into it Took that a while ago, we're going to be having some awesome sunsets pretty soon as we enter winter. Fucking love clouds and water I'd like some hoisin with that duck please. Although it's pretty coot.
i have a kayak. the lake just melted this week though, so i'm probably going to wait a little longer to take it out.
Oh no? I was once sea kayaking a mile or so from shore at night in the Sea of Cortez just north of Punta San Felipe, I had been paddling into an out-going tide for about 4 hours and I was pretty exhausted. As the tides changed the sea became like glass and reflected the heavens so perfectly it looked like I was paddling in space! look up, blackness and stars. Look down, blackness and stars. More intense than any acid trip lemme tell ya... I like plenty of deep salt water between my hull and the bottom. I've never been river kayaking, not whitewater anyway. Flat water kayaking is a different trip entirely, I love that too. Really cool is to duck down in the cockpit and slide silently into a flotilla of ducks then have them burst into the air all around you when you surprising them by thumping on your hull. Nice pic BTW :2thumbsup:
Good idea to wait the lakes around here are finally starting to melt as well but the water is still colder than a mother-fuck Hotwater
Thats because they knew they could kick your ass if you started shit lol Geese too. They will capsize your ass.
Why wait unless you plan on going in? I almost tipped my kayak when a spider came crawling up my leg but yeah the water was just above freezing, felt nice. I dont fuck with geese they have chased me multiple times lol
It's fun kayaking when it's cold out, the exercise warms up the inside of the kayak, especially if you are using a skirt. Lol, then you don't want to get out and get cold. You don't want to have to do any 'wet exits' though. I hate wearing a dry suit.
I have a kayak and a fishing boat. I love being out on the water. Coincidentally, my daughter and I did our spring cleaning on the boat earlier today and spent all afternoon on the lake. Didn't catch a damn thing either. That lake is my least favorite place to fish but I was more interested in just hanging out with her anyway. We had a nice afternoon. In my area, we have a number of rivers, a number of fairly large lakes and plenty of smaller lakes and ponds. No ocean around here but it would be sweet to do some ocean kayaking.
I love kayaking. I don't own kayaks but I should, its actually probably my favorite outdoor activity. There are a couple of really nice lakes near here I like to go to.
Yes, we kayak on rivers, lakes, and streams. Also we used to have a big pond we'd kayak on. This is where I fell out one time in the cold weather with clothes on and tried to right the kayak and push it to the dock. Not a good idea, I quickly tired and had to make a mad dash for the dock without the boat before my strength gave out. Not fun. If you are new to kayaks be careful. They are impossible to empty once swamped. Also I had a co-worked who was a kayak guide at Ohiopye in Western PA and he said he helped pull a number of bodies from the Yough river. Dead ones. I've never attempted class I or II rapids. I also have a canoe.
Me too, love going around the coasts in the summer (in a winter wetsuit!), in and out of coves and caves
