Child offenders. Since the year 1990 we have executed 19 offenders who's crimes were committed when the were 16 or 17 years old.
I think if the crime fits the death penalty should be looked at. I don't care what any social worker says, people my age in their teens know just as much as a 30 year old that killing someone is wrong.
I agree, i think its foolish to believe that a 16/17 year old doesnt know its wrong to kill someone. I think its wrong to infantilize 16/17 year olds. I'm split on the death penalty though. I do think it should be reduced in this country and saved for the worst of the worst(Treason/OBL)
personally i do not believe in the death penalty...but i think for juvenilles it should depend on the crime?
we wouldnt have a need for the death penalty, they could all just have life sentences, if all the misdemeanor drug offenders were released thered be plenty of room in the prisons...
But, where do you draw the line? A 10 year old understands that killing is wrong....my 5 year old understands that. It is a very grey area.
http://justice.uaa.alaska.edu/forum/f114wi95/114wintr.pdf It's outdated(95), but i doubt the laws have changed.
Here is a list state by state of crimes punishble by death: http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/article.php?did=144&scid=10 In Connecticut, we're due to execute our 1st criminal since the 70's in January.
thanks fer that link... interesting.... i didn't know you could still be hanged in washington...! if i was gonna have to die, i'd definately pick to be hanged but only if people watch.
