I have decided, after much consideration, the only way to go is to neglect my hair. So, day two, no comb, already I'm feeling something going on. http://aycu38.webshots.com/image/43317/2005199013832580732_rs.jpg So, forward we go.
The reason is, is because I was impatient, hence the desire to back comb. But, in essence, I much prefer the idea of letting them form naturally. I love the idea of nature doing its thing. Somebody posted to me the other day and pointed out that backcombing was usually accompanied by obsessive palm rolling and crotcheting, and was generally an attempt at forcing nature. No disrespect to the back combers but I just prefer the romantic idea of nature being the sole force in the creation of my locks. I love nature, and respect the way it prevails. I love the curiosity of its seemingly inbuilt intelligence. I love the way that hair, if left alone, acquires a mind of its own and weaves itself majestically. I want to witness that first hand and take joy in it. To start from scratch excites me. So it just seems the natural route. Also, I've studied carefully (obsessively) different pictures, and I really do have to agree, but I think locks formed using the neglect method really do look the best in the end.
neglect is fun and easy for boys and girls! i haven't brushed, conditioned, or detangled my hair for about 4 or 5 months and i've got around 30 dreads, mostly in the back and sides of my hair. my hair's curly like yours and the process has been fun.... and lazy. i separate them every couple days or so and wash them and that's it. they're all wacky and loopy and cute- much more so than they'd be if i had backcombed. i like them and i like checking out their progress every week or two. it's like a very slow surprise! i'd put up a recent picture but i don't feel like figuring out how to work my mom's camera. or trying to take a photo of the back of my head. good luck! don't get discouraged.... neglect does take a while.
i have just started on the neglect path myself friend so keep us updated and maybe we can share pics of our journey together for inspiration
