Just beginning my forays into hip-hop

My general music taste is classical and world. I like a lot of 60s/70s rock, folk and blues. I also enjoy jazz and am starting to get into some electronica-stype stuff.

I have been trying to educate myself in hip-hop as well. For one thing I am a huge weed-smoker and hip-hop culture is a huge part of weed culture. Some of my stoner friends are avid hip-hop fans and hanging out with them is what began to introduce me to the genius of hip-hop. Unfortunately, everything we listened to was on someone else's iPod so I never really new the artists or album names. Only when I did a music exchange with another weed buddy did I become acquainted with Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, and Wu-Tang Clan by name and starting recognizing their styles and knowing a little bit about their music.

Of course it goes w/o saying that I love the Macklemore album beyond everything.

I finally downloaded ATCQ's full discography after viewing "Beats, Rhymes and Life" and have been loving pretty much all of it...I know...I am behind the curve. But these guys could srsly rhyme.

QUESTION TO THE HIP-HOP EXPERTS HERE WHO MAYBE ARE MORE PLUGGED INTO MAINSTREAM HIP-HOP CULTURE THAN ME:
Do you think Macklemore's "Same Love" will have the desired effect (acceptance of gay culture), by virtue of its "a culture founded from opression" argument, on the consciousness of the wider hip-hop culture? Or is the heteronormativity/homophobia so deeply entrenched that that track may be causing a lot to write off Macklemore himself as "gay shit"? Any sense of whether it is having impact?
