I can't do jury duty, because we don't have jury duty in the Netherlands.

jury duty is cool I guess. It is mostly government workers who serve on juries..they get paid to be there..everybody else has an excuse not to be on a jury

^Do people normally not get paid for jury duty?

I would like to be called up for jury duty but there is no way I could miss the pay.

I guess salaried workers could afford it.

yeah, if you don't get paid by your employer, you don't have to serve.

Nonsense, Your employer doesn't have to pay wages when you are not working. The employer can't penalize you for the time off though.
The state pays a per diem rate for serving.

In Massachusetts most employers will pay for 3 days, but after that the state pays $50 a day. Around here, that's barely enough for lunch and transportation.

Since when do the cops come to your door and inform you about serving jury duty? What kind of fucked up shit is that?

    Melai,

I am not sure about ALL states, but you don't get paid for jury duty. I believe if you work, however, that your place of employment must pay you for missed time because of said jury duty.

I was called to serve jury duty a little over a year ago. I came in and sat for about an hour or two before I was told I could go. I believe both of the pending trials had reached a plea agreement or something, so there was no need for jurors that day and everyone was let go.

It was cool, because then I had the rest of the day to do what I wanted, and I still got paid by my workplace.

get letter in the mail . you have been picked for jury duty, return promptly:
    <tosses letter in the garbage..
    gets new letter.
< returns letter with magic marker writing on form. not serving on a jury, cops and crooked judge murdered my brother. dont bother me no more.
get letter again asking to explain above ..
< returns letter with: Use your fucking computers to look it up, dont bother me no more..
    havent been bothered anymore..

My last notice mentioned that if I was over 70, I didn't have to serve. Guess they found out that we old suckers haven't a lick 'a sense.

i can only speak for nj before now and the way it works there is your employer dosnt have to pay you. the state pays you $5 a day to serve. work cant penalize you for time missed. if your job dosnt pay you (some jobs do pay as part of their benefits package) you have to still go but you will easily get off of any cases under the grounds of financial hardship.

and yeah im still trying to figure out the whole cop bringing the paper in person thing.

Well back in the day, last time I got called for jury duty, I didn't have a car (it's about a 30 minute drive from my house to the courthouse), and I was a basketcase over figuring out wtf I was going to do, so one of the ladies I worked with looked over my form and told me to circle that I was "not of sound mind and good moral judgement." ...So I did and they definitely haven't summoned me again. I don't know if I'm listed as crazy in their system, but I have a car now, so it wouldn't be any big deal to get there. Haha. It sucks, though, they don't even pay enough to cover the gas to get there, let alone the lost wages.
