I just got a jury duty summons and one of the questions asked is "are you of good moral character". now I live in a VERY conservative county that thinks gays are just a half step above islamic terrorist.

so I wonder if I could say "I am gay and therefore, by the definition of the community, I am not of good moral character" and should be excused from jury duty. LOL

edit: yanno, play the system against itself. but right wingers think I'm ok enough to serve on a jury, but not ok enough to get married, have children etc.

If you want to get out of jury duty, do it :p Although depending who's reviewing it, it may not be enough.

    Dude:

You want to look into the wider consequences of your actions. Sure, claiming that you do not conform with the moral views of the majority in your county may save you quite some time and effort, not to mention the excruciating boredom you'll be facing out there.

Make sure however, that the statement you are about to make may NOT be used against you, should you be applying for a job, loan or housing? (I am ignorant about the particular legalities in your jurisdiction but it ALWAYS makes sense to have all your aces covered, if you can help it).

whoa...wait...there is degrees of gayness?...like a gay dude that wears lipstick is more gay than the weightlifting macho fag?.....dude...lawyers arent like you and me..for instance...the prosecutor may think he needs a smart, polite gay dude for his side and the defense lawyer may think the same...i would go with some other excuse...there has got to be a website that tells people exactly what to say to bail on jury duty and if there isnt there should be one

    Easy to get out of.

    Consider this exchange:

txbarefooter: "Your honor, is this a murder case? I was hoping to see some crime scene pics."
    Answer: No.
txbarefooter: "Darn! Well is it a rape case, rapes are almost as good as murder."
    Answer: No.
txbarefooter: "Shit!, well any chance of it becoming a murder case? I mean is the guy violent? Maybe we could provoke him to kill someone in court. Now that would be awesome!"
Answer: "Whats wrong with you boy?"
txbarefooter: "Your honor, one other question. Are you wearing anything under your robe, I've always wondered about that, can I get a peek?"
    Judge: Juror dismissed! Next.

I would think that the question "Are you of Good Moral Character" to be a very broad and opinionated type of Legal question for a Court of Law, I believe that is what they put as a question, but in my mind I question the very Question at hand. I am Gay and live in Rural City in Indiana, where Organized Religion and Religious Money rules the City Limits, I would believe to say that I was Gay, I would be disqualified. Due to the closed mindedness of the city I live in and the stigma still attached to being a homosexual in 2011 here.

Yet, I still find that who or what defines the Major aspects of the question at hand breaking down the words 'Good' and 'Moral'

    1. Does the definition of "Good" vary from place to place, giving the demographics of our Country? Say in my community even -- "Shoplifter Arrested at local Walmart" makes the front page of the Newspaper. VS. A much larger community where that is nothing and have violent crimes to investigate and report like homicides.

    2. Where do they as the county base the term "Moral"? I mean like since the Constitution or whatever Separates Church and State, the term could easily be taken into context of a Biblical Moral type Character which being Gay is considered 'NO' in most organized religions, while if they were to go to the Law of the Land, being Gay is no longer considered a Mental Illness, or is no longer Illegal to have homosexual sex, then going on the Law of the Land, Yes, as a Gay person you should be considered to be in "Good Moral Standing".

    3. While at the same time would they consider an unmarried couple who is heterosexual who are living together out of wedlock with children and say having to get a paternity test to find out who the father is be that of more 'Moral' in there eyes than someone who is Gay. It is just so broad of a question to most likely rule out anyone they find not wanted to be considered or undesirable in their eyes, for the Jury Duty.

So, it has been a little over a week now since the thread started, have you decided what to do or have they made a decision? Just Curious. I never get to be considered for Jury Duty as I have a Mental Disability and am Bipolar I with Mixed States with Episodes of Psychosis. So I do not even qualify if I wanted to. But wondering how it is going for you.

Write on the form: I am very much GAY.
If they refuse to have you on the jury because - apparently - your country is soooo homophobic - even within the jury sytem - you will be dismissed with out filling anything else in or saying anything more.
I think you will be refreshingly surprised (or sadly disappointed) you will still be eligible to do jury service.
I have never read about anybody being dismissed from jury service because they are gay - not in the last 5 decades, anyway.

I'm glad you appreciate the gay card doesn't actually work.
You might want to look into the adoption process too.
Where have you been for the last 5 decades?

yeah, go for it - throw it back at the system.

Do things because you want to not because they want you to............if you are not good enough to be accepted by your peers then why should u do their dirty work?

my full support for whatever u decide,

    Simon
