best band of the last thirty years. the music and the lyrics are the most dark and depressing ever but i love to listen to them. what are your favourite joy division songs?

I lived in Manchester for five years and there is no band's music that captures the atmosphere of bleakness, urban decay and unease you might experience walking through a dark Mancunian underpass in a bad neighbourhood at 3am in the morning.

They were a very special band.
I prefer the first album overall, its in my top 10 debuts from Pressed Rats thread.
The song "She's Lost Control" is a particular favourite although I find it quite disturbing given the subject.

Hard to believe given their post-punk background that Ian Curtis was a huge fan of psychedelic prog rockers Nektar of Tab in the Ocean fame.

Don't anyone tell me that Jim Morrison wasn't an influence on Curtis ;)

I really love Closer. It's more chaotic and explosive. Unknown Pleasures was such a tight peice of work, it's beatiful in it's darkness.

i think they are really psychedelic. shadowplay is their best song. i never really think of them as dark really. they are kind of like funky punk, but really sort of industrial.

and actually they were influenced by alot of stuff you wouldnt expect, like northern soul and bands like love and led zeppelin. its just that they couldnt play so well and gave up on the idea of doing songs like 7 and 7 is.

and on a couple of live bootleg tapes ive got they sound way heavier, more like the stooges, than the sound of their albums.

I prefer the live versions to the studio versions. I like that heavy sound.
I'd also like to see 24 hour party people.

    my favourite joy division songs:
    disorder
    shadowplay
    isolation
    new dawn fades
    digital

I have alive album of Joy Division. I'm not sure which one it is, but i think it's the one in france where they didn't have all the technical problems.

I've heard a few samples of their songs...I liked what I heard but I haven't heard a full song, so I don't really know how I feel about their music. :)

Joy Division is one of my favorite bands. Discovering them really turned me on to alot of mancunian bands such as Echo and the Bunnymen and Magazine (which was the aftermath of the Buzzcocks)

I've heard a few of their songs, its very gloomy stuff. I've heard them classed as a high-tech Punk band which is probably how I'd describe them. I particularly like Disorder, Transmission, Warsaw.

Easily one of the most influential bands of all time. Just turn on MTV2 in the UK and you'll probably see a band that owes a great deal to Joy Division. It's a sad legacy, but at the same time, a great one.
