Edit: I don't hate NIN's version, they made a good song, but Johnny Cash made it his

I prefer the JC version. I think even Trent Reznor did too. I heard that his reaction to it was something like "That's not a NIN song anymore, it's a Johnny Cash song now."

Just watched that video again. Thanks for posting it. IMO it is one of the best "covers" ever recorded in any genre. (And if anyone cares to know....my dad was friends with JC and his wife but it was before I was born so I never met them)

I wish I had heard the NIN version before the Johnny Cash version. The Johnny Cash version stands on It's own phenomenally, so moving. I get the impression the NIN version is supposed to be listened to within the context of the album. The NIN version seems fractured and dissonant on It's own.

Cash all the way, he cleaned it up and made it grittier at the same time.

NIN wrote better than they knew. Johnny Cash knew what the song was about, he'd lived it.

Nin is good but johnny cash is legendary. I love that song he did called gods gonna cut you down. So eery a man so close to death talking about its inevitability

Johnny Cash sang it with his entire being. To me, the NIN version is just a song, but Cash's version is his soul.
