Just wondering if anyone else here is into the music of the english elizabethan composer and lutanist John Dowland? Most of his music is now transcribed for guitar. For me, it is extremely 'english' music, and very evocative of that whole period of history. Some of it though can seem a little bit dour or even depressing at times. Still, as english composers go, he's definitely one of the finest. 'The Frog Galliard' is IMO his best piece. When he wrote it, he was risking incuring the displeasure of Queen Elizabeth, as 'the Frog' does not refer to an amphibian in this case, but to the the Duc d'Alençon, a French Emissary to the english court with whom she had an affair, and reffered to as her 'frog'. Considering he was also a catholic, he was lucky to get away with it.
