I really want to lose some of my excess fat and decided I was going to start jogging. At my work I go up and down stairs a lot and also walk a lot (or so I thought), so I thought I would be able to at least jog a mile. I tried to do so and could probably only jog maybe a quarter of a mile or a little less. I did do some little spurts of jogging after that but I thought I was going to pass out. Nonetheless, I did finish the mile through walking and jogging. Any suggestions to build up my endurance? Should I just start with decreasing my distance?

Jogging is great because it's so cheap and you're independent - all you probably need is a pair of good shoes. You don't have to go to a specific place - you do it out in nature and any weather is just fine. And you just start slow .... slooooow ... switch to walking before you faint. Same with distance - increase only when you feel you can make it. Go with how you feel ... and ignore all the other joggers on the passing lane - do it in your very own speed. Just don't get discouraged so quickly. Give yourself at least 4 weeks ! And when you do it every day - you might get addicted - it also helps with low moods. Have fun !
The obvious answer seems to be that you won't burn off fat instantaneously - on the other hand, once you can start logging a fair chunk of miles, it'll come. I've never seen a fat long-distance runner.
Stop eatin chicfila and I garuntee you'll lose weight. With my asshole opinion aside: Start slow. If you can't jog a mile then do something that you can. Push yourself harder than you have before because you don't get results and progression from being lazy and worthless. I would have never thought I could run for 45 minutes straight before I started jogging, but after a while it just becomes like walking.
I'm an avid jogger/runner. I think it's the best exercise out there (cheap, you can do it anywhere, and very independent). I'd say, start with a jog/walk program. Jog for 5 minutes and then walk 5 minutes (vice-versa for 30 minutes all together). Then the next week, try to jog a little longer and walk less. In a month, or sooner, you should be able to jog 1 mile with no walking or no problem. Then to increase your mileage do the same thing (the jog/walk program). Also, drink lots of water (most of the day), do some light weight training also, some Yoga/Pilates, and pushups and situps (or crunches). They do help you with your running/jogging also.
I started jogging last winter but seriously got into it over the summer. Before I started jogging I was 275 jogging for maybe 10 minutes a day and now I'm 215 with way more muscle weight from lifting and I can run 40 minutes a day no problem. It really is addicting once you get used to it.
you should take it easy at first and slowly get to know your limits. If you eventually want to increase your endurance you will have to push yourself, but jogging/running isn't easy on the body and it uses muscles you might not even be aware of in your legs , feet, and ankles. Start off very slowly with a pace that isn't much faster than a brisk walk for a couple of weeks until you feel that both your legs and lungs can take something more strenuous.
