I am trying to get in better shape along with giving my 4 month old puppy an outlet for his energy and was wondering about the safety of taking him jogging with me. I've heard about the 2 year old rule, but I've also heard estimates closer to a year and then the whole "well it depends." I just want to be sure to not injure him in any way.

Let me preface this by saying that I am incredibly out of shape. At the moment I can barely jog for a third of a mile before taking a walking break (hence the reason I am working on getting in shape!) and then jogging some more. Him going for a jog with me isn't going to be some marathon ordeal.

The puppy is a 4 months old mix, part Australian Shepherd and part questionable street mutt. Right now he is not quite 20 lbs and will probably weigh 50-60 lbs when full grown. He gets to run around with my elderly dog in a large fenced yard, but still has plenty of puppy energy left over.

So does anyone have advice as to when/how much I could do some low intensity jogging with puppy? Should I just play it safe by just walking with him? Before I do anything that even borders on strenuous, I would of course check with a vet. All responses are appreciated!

Youll be able to tell if the dog is uncomfortable with the pace, as long as you can read him/her you wont over work it
