I'm so excited right now. I just received an e-mail saying I have been short listed for a full-time position in the summer working for the federal government! It will take up all my time, meaning I may not be able to go to school in the summer as planned or have free time, which what I wanted most this summer: to paint and concentrate on class. But NO I could have a government job with good benefits and hours and money, cause that's what it's all about. I want money, but the job is only for a few months, will take up all my time, and I may not be able to take the classes I wanted to this summer (African + Caribbean Literature and Psychology 102).
Personally I would go for the job, but that is coming from the perspective of having been broke for a long time. Either way, it sounds like you've got cool stuff to do for the summer
Consider taking the job. I noticed you are from Canada, you do know that in today's market if you ever want to be more than casual in the government you have to have a previous in. This could be it. You could probably still take some of the courses you wanted to, check to see if you can take night courses instead or take them at night after the summer is over. Best of luck to you, what ever you decide.
government jobs ftw! max perks min work. id take it. once you've worked for them you've got a foot in the door.
Yeah, I suppose so. I know it's for the best, but at the same time I wanted this summer to relax. I worked all last summer and I missed everything and everyone who came home to visit. I don't want to do that again. I suppose everyone has to work though.
Holy crap. Don't ever do anything related to porn or drugs on a government computer, especially in the U.S. There are so many filters and key stroke monitors watching for everything. That's about the quickest way to get fired or have charges filed against you. .
That proves my point. There were about two dozen people doing that and they are now being investigated. .
For anyone who will be doing a summer job with the government, make sure the computer they assign to you can be logged in only by you and that it's not some general computer where other workers can surf wherever they want on that computer. You don't want to get blamed for something that someone else did on that computer. And don't do anything foolish on it yourself. Summer jobs can be a problem in that respect. An intern is sometimes not fully in the regular system as far as computer assignment goes. You don't want to get blamed for someone else's keystrokes. .
the problem with government jobs is that they have no security, they don't pay well, there is no support from fellow workers when you want a raise for meaningless shit, and you actually have to do stuff .... well!
If you work for the federal government (which I would be) you get paid quite a bit! If you take into account that someone who works at McDonald's who gets minimum wage, dealing with fat, hungry, thus angry people, and over a hot stove all day: I think government jobs are pretty swell. I worked at a call center once, and it was horrible. The security actually is pretty good. My mother works for them, and although she'll never be 'on top' as it were, she's very stable where she is. Now... getting a raise, that's something I agree with, but again, the pay isn't bad in the first place. I live on PEI, where my mother works at one the few places you can work if you want to work for the government. It is considered quite impressive to work there, even though in larger cities it would be a lower government position. I may never get the job, but I'll take all the warnings about pornography into consideration. When I worked at that call center everyone shared computers. You were never on the same one twice in a row. Thank goodness nothing came of that! :9
According to the news articles, the probes were conducted over 5 years and 31 workers were found to be porn surfing. That was out of 3500 workers, so it is a small percentage. Most happened after 2007. Some were disciplined or suspended during that period. One worker resigned. What's revolting is that most of the offenders were upper level officials and some are still working at the SEC. That behavior was going on while the economy was melting down and when the expertise of their jobs was needed the most. Numerous titillating stories like this are going to be bantered around as the Senate debates finance reform. Politicians and the media make good political mileage out of it. .
I've been in that line of work. People are often in a bad mood when they are hungry. I think you'll like the government position better. It's at least worth trying. .
Government jobs are usually pretty decent, unless were talking about a bit higher up the ranks than entry level and start factoring in ethics.
