So an interesting question came to mind as I was passing by a jewelry store, and then later saw an online ad for jewelry.

So I know the meaning behind a diamond ring is important especially during proposals, but if the diamond is artificially made by science as opposed to a diamond that came from a mine, sour the meaning behind a proposal?

I am posting this assuming everyone reading this thread knows I am not talking about fake diamonds. I am indeed talking about the same molecular rock here, so it's a real diamond, it's just how the rock came to be differs, and also price differs as well.

Does it matter to a lady if the diamond used in an engagement ring is from the old world (aka:a mined blood diamond) or from the new world of scientific lab creations?

Anybody else find it weird I post a topic within the realm of the engagement and proposal topics and suddenly a whole bunch of other people post new threads within the same broad topic?

I prefer the authentic diamond, because I love antiques and the spiritual connection they carry with the universe. So, something that took thousands of years to form under serendipitous conditions is much more valuable to me than lab created.

Would I reject a lab created diamond? No. Would I hold it to a lesser value? Perhaps but the level of importance I place on it is soooooo minor that it really doesn't matter anyway. If I had the choice to choose, I would choose natural vs lab grown.

Jewelry is very symbolic to me and I'm very particular about what I wear. I have a few costume pieces but the majority is authentic quality stones and precious metals. One, I don't see the sense in buying fake anything - its better to save and buy quality over quantity. And two, somehow I feel that adorning my body with fake materials somehow cheapens a person.

But what does "fake" even mean when it comes to diamonds and precious rocks?

To me it means something like rhinestones being passed off as diamonds...which is not what we are talking about.

IMHO I think lab grown diamonds are cool because you aren't contributing to global problems and child labor abuses overseas.

It just jives with the ideals of my youth to go do and support things in life that break the driving persistent problems we have in the world at the expense of suffering from others.

I really don't know anything about "lab diamonds." Are they the same far as their hardness factor and such? Obviously the reason why diamonds are worth so much is their rarity and how they take so long to form. But I have no idea pound for pound how authentic vs. man made differ, so couldn't really say...

I can say though if I presented my wife with a "lab made" diamond and told her she'd give me a cross eyed look and think I was being cheap. My wife's not a jewelry snob or a gold digger by any means, and I would totally agree as it would be like her giving me a beer with no alcohol in it...

I don't really wear jewelry and I don't support the diamond trade at all so I have no interest in a diamond ring. I would prefer a lab grown diamond actually because at least I would know it was cruelty free, but I guess I wouldn't really see the point in it either. I think I'm missing that particular female gene. I don't really understand why anyone would spend a lot of money on a piece of jewelry.

I have never been fond of diamonds or gold. I do like other stones and will wear silver. I suppose the stones that I do wear are the real deal but they are nowhere near the cost of a diamond.

I'm not a big jewelry person to begin with. My wedding ring has real diamonds. I wear that and an anniversary band with diamonds. Those are the only stones I wear. They are pretty simple. Nothing over the top. I don't care enough about diamonds to demand a certain number of carats. Honestly I couldn't even tell you what size mine is and I picked it out a million years ago. I don't know enough about real vs lab created but I would rather have a simple band with no stone rather than a CZ. I know you're not referring to CZs but that's just my opinion.

I'm not a diamond fan, myself.
But ethical, mined diamonds exist, mainly from Canada.

And one can get cremains made into a diamond,so a a long as the rock isn't the ex, be happy with the intent, I say.

If it is the ex, run.
