I found this particularly enlightening considering the recent turn of events :)

A Look at the January 14th Weekend
    From Henry Seltzer

Things have been more than a little crazy lately, at least here in the U.S., and perhaps especially in either California or Washington DC, and astrologers have attributed this in part to the simultaneous retrogrades of Mercury in Capricorn and Mars in Gemini – an ongoing story as the January month continues to unfold. One recent peak of the Mars retrograde cycle just recently took place, on the afternoon of Thursday, the 12th, with Mars’ station to direct motion, meaning that the fiery red planet was stopped dead-still in the sky and slowly beginning to once again move forward. This brought up issues with his well-known attributes, such as high emotion, forward momentum being somewhat stifled, and the potential for anger to come up or even to rage out of control. These astrological indications are still with us for the weekend of January 14th that follows, and the 14th is also the Moon’s Last Quarter.

This Quarter Moon takes place at 5:22 PM PT – or 8:22 PM on the east coast and later still for Europe – and this phase was termed by seminal astrologer Dane Rudhyar as a “crisis of consciousness,” meaning that in the course of events, as they develop and as we reflect upon them, something has very likely got to give. It might be that new understandings can emerge like the Phoenix out of the ashes of the old.

This astrological configuration also has some quite remarkable characteristics in relation to the position of Mars, continuing to move quite slowly, and to new planets beyond Pluto, recently discovered and named in this current century. The Sun and Moon in square in fact make a sesqui-yod to Mars, within one degree, while Mars closely aspects retrograde Mercury, along with Eris in Aries, Makemake in Libra, and Haumea in Scorpio (a bi-quintile). Eris herself is exactly sextile to Saturn in Aquarius with Neptune at the midpoint. This is quite a collection of outer planet energies; the new Nature planets Haumea and Makemake call for us to be thoughtful concerning our deepest principles, and inner moral compass, while Eris as Feminine Warrior urges action in support of these unique individual values. We might think of this powerfully confrontational weekend as another strong stage of the current Mars retrograde cycle and a new way, through trials, to move ourselves forward.
