Well I guess you're the exception. I was talking to all of her 'fans', who never knew her but insist she was this and that because they like her music.

I am sure that there are other ppl on the planet that new Janis also. I doubt if I was the only one that ever talked to her. I was just pointing out that very thing. I have nothing to prove. I'm just stating my opinion, like everyone else.

    Blessings

Yeah, scratcho's got a bug up his ass about me ever since I argued with him about women in the military. Now he has a sarcastic response to all my posts. It's kind of like having a sidekick.

Anyway shameless, my point was simply that people will always jump in to defend their heroes, even if they never knew them personally. Liking someone's music does not automatically make them a good person. People take their interest in these celebrities to the point of hero worship, and begin to feel like they know them personally. I used to do this too. They read biographies, watch interviews, etc. The problem is that this does not equate to knowing a person, and to me, it sounds foolish when people say 'oh, what a troubled childhood John had' or 'Janis was this or that,' speaking as if of a close friend. What you see is a public image -- no more, no less. What that person is really like is a whole other matter.

If you say you knew Janis Joplin, I believe you. No one else here has said it, and I think they would have if it was the case. Most were not even alive at the same time she was. Do you understand my point now?

She was a good person. You speak of the FEW that think their role models are perfect. I think anyone mature can know that no one person is "perfect" and everyone has done things their not proud of. If your a fan of someone you stick up for them. You should have accurate info and not just be talking out your ass but you can easily "know" them from reading about them and what not too. There are truths to biographies and documentaries. Sure, some people represent their heroes and are wrong. But saying someone had a troubled life or felt this way about a subject is not "misleading". Things like how your hero is as a person is a huge aspect as to why you respect them so much. A person is the sum of events that they've been through. Yes there are those idols that maybe should not be idolized but once again, it's not most.

Again, people make these statements as if they know the people personally. Biographies are fine as sources of information, but when people assert someone's character as if they actually know them, I have to call bullshit. Just the way it is.

Really, just the way it is? I don't think your getting it. If people get information from people in biographies then they can get a sense of what the person is about. Actions speak louder then words. If they do good things for others and are careing/etc then yes they can speak of them as a good person. Just because you say someone is a good person does not mean your hinting that you knew them. Their saying their opinion. Are you saying you never say anything similar about people you've never met?

I don't talk about the sex lives and sexual preferences and desires of people I've never met (or even most I have). How's that?

This is ironic, because you've basically summed up how I felt about the obnoxious dude I met at the bar: He WAS talking about the sex life and sexual preference of someone he never met (Janis). And to add insult to injury, he was bragging that he actually met her --which I knew was pure crap. So why is it cool for you to call this thread stupid (your first post), when you're pretty much reacting as I did? We all understand your point (you've stated it again and again). We're not idiots. It's just that some of us don't agree with you. And that's how life is. I mean, do you go through life expecting everyone to agree with you 100% of the time? What makes your opinion so superior?

Oh for fuck's sake. I've repeated myself in an attempt to clarify my point to people who seemed not to understand what I meant. My opinion's not superior to anyone's. Think whatever you want.

He said I have a bug up my ass about him. He's entirely correct.I don't like people that think they have to "set the record straight" constantly, most often in his case,to the detriment of a pleasant conversation about things that happened before he was even born. And I mean he does it constantly.I haven't seen anything positive about any of his posts and what did he prove by saying none of us knew her?So fuckin' what? I'm beginning to think he's one of those that like to make others look small and stupid so that he can look big and smart.Ignore button, here I come.

I tried my best to ignore him, but he just kept coming back. And it seemed like his main intent (despite his grandiose claims) was to mock and belittle folks. I mean, he started off the discussion by announcing what a stupid thread this is. Then he proceeds to leave endless critical comments. What's the point? If I think something is stupid, I don't go out of my way to become a part of it. But he seemed determined to prove we were all a bunch of idiots. And I've never read any of his posts on other threads.

Yeah, I was sort of wondering about that. Guess I'd have to buy a bullet proof vest, and get out of town before dark. ;)

Okay, let me 'set the record straight' here. I apologize for calling the thread stupid. That was a knee-jerk reaction to the problem I see with it, which I've explained already. I'm not here to make anyone look like an idiot, to mock or belittle anyone. I repeated my point because people kept questioning me about it -- if they hadn't, I wouldn't have bothered.

What scratcho says... take it with a grain of salt. We don't see eye to eye. I can see where he's coming from, but he's misinterpreting my comments. I'm not going to get into it, because I don't want this to turn into another big argument.

I appreciate the apology. And I did understand your point of view. I might not agree with it, but I did understand where you were coming from. So it's all good.
