Are you saying a board created for money suddenly had super natural powers? Did these boards have status prior to the 1890's? Were there 'talking boards' prior to the 19th century? Sounds like urban legends to me. Plus, the power of wishful thinking. I guess this is how religion started.

I don't walk under ladders. I also avoid cracks in the pavement.
I realise that absolutely nothing is going to happen to me if I do or do not.
I also get freaked out if I am alone in a dark secluded building.
I've been know to get into a cold sweat just thinking about what might be out there. Watching. Waiting.

Yes, I know. I was moving it on from 'do you' to 'why?'
I was just pointing out that I do have a fear about certain things, when the reality is I don't have anything to fear.
It's an irrational fear, based on what my mind is telling me.
Who was the first person to say walking under a ladder is bad luck?
Why is walking under a ladder bad luck?
Who was the first person to say that these boards are 'bad luck,' and not to be messed with?
I'm just saying that our minds do create the fear we feel.
Some people would dismiss walking under a ladder as 'nothing to worry about'.
Just like I dismiss these boards as 'nothing to worry about'.
Why do our minds give certain things credence, and not other things?
There is a myriad of things people believe based on, well, what their minds are telling them, and what a common belief is (or isn't).
How can a mass produced board connect you to 'the other side'?
It's down to what your mind is telling you, surely.
There are certain things that a mass of people believe to be true - and then that becomes true, regardless of if it is actually true or not.
I know the person behind the actor in my picture isn't real - but it still scares the crap out of me.
