Elliott Smith should be "emo" enough... though I wouldn't call him emo. :p

Something Corporate is damn depressing... I can't get enough of Andrew McMahon.

I have been too... It is my friends fault.

Bright Eyes is a folk/emo type singer. He can easilly be appreciated by both emo kids and hippies. Both political and folky, and sort of depressing. Ah, but not all emo music is depressing! Just take a look at Weezer and Jimmy Eat World!

But alas, Brand New, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, and Dashboard have to be my favorites (along with Bright eyes, of course!)!

Can't say I like Bright Eyes... I've never listened to him, though. His looks and quotes just turn me off. :p

That, and the "modern day Bob Dylan" fans.

for awhile i liked "im wide awake, its morning", and it isnt to bad...but i just cant really take his singing most of the time...i hate to say that, cause i hate judging people on how they sing usually, but bright eyes singing just gets annoying to me sometimes.

Actually a lot of hippies seem to appreciate grunge, although it was actually seen as being INCREDIBLY depressing. I don't understand why emo gets such a bad rap, because blues is the same way. A very emotional style of music about lifes problems. Only differances are 1.) the type of lyrics (instead of drinking ones self to death they may sing about how they hope the other person catches some sort of lip fungus from the next person they kiss) and 2.) the respect it gets (almost everyone sees blues as a great style of music albeit depressing. However, emo is seen as a bunch of kids who cut themselves-although almost no emo kid actually does-.)

Crazy... earlier today I had a short self-debate on whether or not emo is the modern day blues...I don't believe its anywhere near it, but obviously there are quite a few similarities.

It's because MTV never raped, killed, deconstructed, pissed on, glued back together, and marketed blues music.

Eh, "Unplugged" was kind of a "real" show. I mean, even Dylan played on there...

Although I am unfamiliar with Matt Pond, the rest of the people you listed actually aren't emo. Abba, Robbie Williams and Maroon 5 are pop and Coldplay is alternative, in the way that U2 is (they have a very similiar sound). Some poppy emo bands would be like Panic! At the Disco and Fall Out Boy.
