Have any of your ladies ever used an IUD? Just curious as to what your experiences with it were and if you'd recommend it to anyone else.

I had one for two years. It was great while it lasted but my husband...ehem.."knocked it out" if you will. We have two more children now.

My understanding is that it's highly effective--perhaps the most effective form of reversible birth control on the market. So I'm sure that's part of the appeal

    I really like it.

It lasts for a few years, so 1 upfront cost and your good to go. Also with some they can make your periods stop which in itself is great!!

I'm not opposed to putting things in my body. I use a diva cup. But I just don't see the whole IUD thing working for me.

I have heard it's best for women who have had children. Ones who have not are much more likely to push it out (tighter mussels I guess). I think doctors do not like to give to childless women for this reason. I had a gf a few years ago with one, and she figured out it came out months ago, she was childless. But she was not good about checking it. It has a failure rate higher then most people think, it is a foreign object and your body will try to get rid of it, use caution.

I used the IUD for some years..... Once it came half way out and it hurt like - well really bad. then I get pelvic infections. I never had kids and it's because of the infections.....but I was a lucky one I never wanted kids.....so it all worked out for me. Also my husband could feel the wire or string or whatever and he didn't like it. well, that's my 2 cents.

I have a friend who had one. She said it was extremely painful at the start and suffered weeks of spotting/bleeding. She recommends it all the same though, as those symptoms pass.

I've got Paraguard now. I did have some spotting for the first few weeks and some mild cramping for 3-4 days after. I'm good to go for another 7+ years if it stays in place. I've never had any issues, but do check the strings regularly. Husband hasn't ever mentioned feeling the strings either, but could see how one could. My midwife told me that she could shorten the strings if he had any complaints. I did have slightly heavier, longer periods for the first 16 months. Heavier 3-4 days instead of 2-3 and would last 7 days instead of 5. Now 3 years later, I'm back to where I was before I got it. Best decision I ever made.

My better half has the Mirena and we are on the second one now. Somewhere on year # 2 on the second one (6+ years). I highly recommend it and besides the serious cramping when getting it placed, she prefers it to the pill/condom/ring.

I am also thinking about getting one. I've done the nuvaring for 3+ years and I love it but I think this is another option I'd like to try. Planned parenthood recommended an article on their facebook page which I found interesting. I will link it below. It says that IUD's are the #1 method of birth control used by gynecologists, which is pretty cool!

I always wondered about those.. To me it seems kinda bad for the woman, I wouldn't ask my wife to go through that..

I always seem to equate it in my mind with shoving a handful of pennies up there :/

I have the mirena... I have had it since January 2009. I have one more year on it after this January and i personally like it a lot.
I first got it put in because i have had trouble remembering pills and i dont want depo shot cause of other reasons... I don't have any kids of my own. My doctor told me that most doctors don't like giving the mirena to women without kids because of the cervix. When you are pregnant and have a baby your cervix stretches and it shrinks a little after you have the baby but it never goes back to its original size. A woman that has not had a baby just has a regular sized cervix. So is what they did was they gave me pain medication for the night before and the morning and this other little pill i had to take that night then that morning and by the time im at my appointment and doing the procedure i was having contractions. So the point is its easier for them to put the mirena in a stretched cervix than a regular one.

I personally like my mirena... It works well cause i haven't gotten pregnant and without it i definatly would have been by now. I have heard a lot of horror stories about it falling out and it can get knocked out of place and get infected and all of that but really theres health risks with any kind of birth control/medicine that you put in your body.
The shot deteriorates your uterus, the pills can give you heart attacks and strokes and soo many of them have been recalled, the mirena can fall out or get knocked out of place.. shit happens.

I would recomend the mirena to anyone. You can get the 5 year mirena or the 10 year mirena. I have heard about a new form of mirena you can get put in your arm but i never read or looked into it.

When i first got it put in i bled/discharged for 3 months and it was very uncomfortable but i haven't really had a period since. I have spotted a few times but thats it. When my boyfriend and i have sex he hits it sometimes but you can always get your doctor to trim the string on it so he doesn't hit it. They prefer not to trim it cause the shorter it is the harder it is for them to take out but if you tell them your boyfriend hits it then they can trim it for you.

When we get the money, it will probably be from income taxes i am going to take my mirena out a year early but thats because my boyfriend is fixed so i can't get pregnant and we both decided that it would be best for me to take it out since i cant get pregnant anyway..

Anyway, also i think its best to consult/talk to your doctor to make a decision. Its good to get input from other people's experiences but also i think it would be a good idea to discuss with your doctor what you both think is best.

Let us know what your decision is. Good luck.

I got my Mirena (that is the one with a localized distribution of progestin) in June 2009.
I had a good amount of cramping, and my cervix was just not going along with my plan, but I also walked home, about a mile.
Spotting for about a month and a half, and since then, maybe a dozen drops, literally drops, of blood.

I do check it every couple of weeks, and whenever I take mucinex, as that increases mucus secretions, including cervical mucus.

I was in a poly situation, and was honest with the doc, so I was lucky she went ahead and inserted it.
Partners occasionally notice the string. The one who felt it most said it wasn't uncomfortable. And said it was far better than a condom.

As I'm looking at replacing it a year from June, I am likely going to do just that. Permanent methods are on the table.

I did see a little weight gain, probably 10-15 pounds.
So, inserted at age 40, minimal side effects. Some weight gain. Seems I get fewer spots.
And, well, it takes three partners to keep up with me!

I've had the non-hormonal V -IUD in for years, no infections, no mood swings, no pregnancies and unlike the T it doesn't slip down in the uterus to the cervix.
