Dreadlocks were started and completed at home using a fine toothed back-comb in 2008/09. It took 2 people anywhere between 2-7 hours a day for 2 weeks before the process was complete. They went through the funky stage where they became very loopy and stringy. Dreadlocks take a great deal of patience and really go through different phases the first several months and years. After 4 years and almost having to shave my hair after some interlocking/root flipping (I do NOT recommend) I had extensions and maintenance with an amazing loctician in Oklahoma, using human hair and a crochet hook. Added a great deal of length and volume to my locks. Originally I wanted to dye my hair all one color....but I have grown quite fond of the auburn/blonde combination. I have gotten some criticism for maintaining my locks, and I do prefer the look of more natural dreads. Unfortunately, my career field (biology) doesn't allow me to really let them go like I would like to. Sorry These aren't in order, I'm not used to posting pics.... Photo 1)This was the first day all my dreadlocks were completed at home using a fine toothed back-comb. It took 2 people anywhere between 2-7 hours a day for 2 weeks before the process was complete. This was about 5 months after they began. They went through a funky stage where they became very loopy and stringy. Dreadlocks take a great deal of patience and really go through funky phases the first several months. Photo 2) 4.8 months. Really getting lots of length. Photo 3) Taken last week (Nov 13). Just having fun with funky up-dos Photo 4) 2 years. My first attempt to bleach my hair....turned it kinda brassy, but it was a fun look for the summer.Blond and finally a little length past the shoulders. 2.5+ years(ish) Photo 5) This is when they were about 3 years and probably my favorite stage (wish I could go back in dreadlocky time) http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=53079&stc=1&d=1390939490 And: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=53080&stc=1&d=1390939490 And: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=53081&stc=1&d=1390939490 And: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=53082&stc=1&d=1390939490 And: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=53083&stc=1&d=1390939490
I also forgot to mention that I trimmed a few inches this fall so that they are all one legth. I have heard nothing but negative comments about trimming locked hair, but aside from the ends attracting lint I have not had problems with undreading/loose hairs/
Thanks y'all! Looks like there are some awesome looking dreadies on here, its nice to be back I am happy to offer any advice, as well as give the contacts for my loctician if anyone doesn't mind a trip to Oklahoma. Errrr....I realized these pics may seem kinda vain, I just have a few FB pics I can upload. I'm not too purty most of the time. This was right after I received extensions: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=53084&stc=1&d=1390953876 This is another new pic, after I trimmed up the ends. My extensions are over a year old and doing well. : http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=53086&stc=1&d=1390953876 This was about 2 years in, I dunno why but I like to look of less mature dreads, of course-this was before I almost ruined them and they are much more natural than they are now: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=53085&stc=1&d=1390953876
