    wow.. that's kinda freaky.

i think it could have it's positives and negatives... it could keep more men from even attempting rape for the chance of getting one of these things on them... but on the other hand, it could outrage them further and they might be more violent (as one person said in the article) hmmm... *shakes head* too bad we can't peacefully stop violence, but are forced to look for violent ways to avenge ourselves. it's also really sad how high the rape and HIV rates are there. :(

a little off subject, but i thought i'd mention i read an article a while back of a nurse in that area (may have been nigeria, but a place with high HIV rates as well) who said that many ppl don't even care if they get AIDS because there's medicine to take care of you now... so sad.

My big reaction is the logistics of wearing it... It said it's worn like a tampon... So how long and how often would you wear one? Do you just walk around all day every day with this thing in? And, what, change it every so-many hours? How are these women to afford that?

Whether it will deter rape or escalate violence more often will have to wait to be seen. My assumption is that those who would escalate the violence are already prone to be violent, so saying or doing the wrong thing without wearing the new condom could just as easily be used as an excuse to escalate violence.

I guess my fear would be that, as more men become aware of these things, they will find a way around it -- shove a broom handle up there first to make sure the path is clear or something. Which could easily count as an escalation of the harm done to the woman, if what he uses causes more damage than a penis alone.

You hear those comments about here (North America) too, tho. As the horrible spectacle of the '80s has faded into memory and people are able to live much longer with the virus (which I think is much more the case here where more people can afford the newest drug coctails), people are less and less concerned about protection. Even looking at the public service announcements about it now (so few I haven't noticed any recently) compared to those that seemed to be all over the place (at least as I remember) a decade to 15 years ago, it doesn't seem like such a big deal anymore. It's a problem for "those people over there" now, just like it was "those (gay) people" here in the early '80s. "We" don't have to worry about it.
