Portuguese is a great language. I personally would take it, though you really must choose which side of the ocean. A lot of words are the same both Brazilian and European/Africa.
If though you decided to really take it far and master it I suggest focusing on one. They do have different dialects.

And I was going to say the same thing about Italian. I used to be not fluent in Spanish but close to it-I was in Italy years ago and could 'understand' what was being discussed. It was close.

I think you need to spend some time with speakers from each country and decide.

Unfortenetly, I don't know anyone who is fluent in either. :/ lol this is gonna be hard deciding between the two. I think portuguese is more simliar to spanish written; in fact a lot of the words are the same. But spoken, italian is more similar I've heard. Lol

In linguistic terms when two countries are side-by-side it’s common for “borrowing and sharing” to take place.

It depends on your motivation for learning the language. If it's just because you will want to visit "some day" I would say neither and go for French instead. I know, I know, everyone hates the French, but in terms of usefulness and employability, it is a better option than Portuguese or Italian. Besides, if you already speak Spanish fluently, you can easily pick them up when you do visit.

If you already have Spanish then you have an advantage for mastering either of the choices you listed.

I guess you are going to have to go with the one that you think will interest you more.

Good luck with your course. :)

    Portuguese.

I know Spanish too. Italy's a great place to visit, Brazil is a great place to stay, IMO.

I'm probably moving to South America next year. :) Brazil's probably a first choice, but Visa's are harder that other places, and I already speak Spanish.

Italian by far. If you know English and Spanish than you basically don't even need to know Portuguese in Brazil. Plus on top of it both Brazil and Argentina have huge a huge Italian heritage from large numbers of Italian immigrants.(The mayor of Beunus Aries was doing an interview for a show on the travel channel I saw once where he joked "We're just a bunch of Italians who speak bad Spanish"

More importantly though Italy is basically the sexiest country on Earth. Hell it's even shaped like a sexy boot. Plus it was the birthplace of Latin(and basically western civilization) which is the historical route of all Romance languages, and Italian is the closest relative to Latin aside from local Corsican and Sardinian languages.

If you dig Romance languages, you could try Romanian.

My friends say Romania is very laid back and there is no materialism and the people there tend to stray away from the illnesses of needless and wasteful consumerism. Beautiful town and cities. And it is a very beautiful language. He volunteered at an orphanage over there. He absolutely fell in love with Romania. I've never made it to Romania, but I love the Romanian accent.

Nonsense. Just because you speak English, does that mean you're already half-fluent in German as well?

Check out this language family map of Europe:
    http://teacherweb.ftl.pinecrest.edu/snyderd/MWH/Projects/cov/images/language.jpg

As you can see, English, Dutch, German, Danish, Icelandic, and other languages are under the Germanic language family.
Languages of Spanish, Portugese, Catalan, Italian, Romanian, are all Romance language family.
