These lines were written in response to a letter published in a Durban newspaper in which the writer told old people that they were not wanted and that they should go into "homes" to make way for the young. I was 30 years old when I wrote this. Arrogant young man Your life too is short, Years pass by swiftly And youth can't be bought. Yes think of that home Cold lonely and bleak, No use complaining Once you're white haired and weak. After three score and ten years Are brains any help? Why not think of your future You callous young whelp. Ring out the old yes And make way for the young, But beware when your time comes And your bell is rung.
Wow, concise and to the point. Another gem unearthed in SA. Thankfully, I now live in a culture where respect for older people is paramount. By the way, was your response published in the newspaper too? Peace, Aidan
This is a great reminder to all of the younger contributors that all 'oldies' are real people with real emotions. And.......... Whatever you think they don't understand, Just remember, they grew up too. Walked young and proud upon this land, Had their problems just like you. But they battled and got through it, Those teenage trials from hell. For this they deserve our praise, Compassion and Love as well. _______________________________________________ Thanks Jim, for inspiring this instant poem. Peace, Aidan
