Hello! I have had buddies tell me that pot plants will change sex. Example: You could have 10 female pot plants in a spot – mid way through the season a couple of those plants will change to males. I heard it was Mother Nature’s way of insuring the next generation. I kind of believe it’s true but would like to know for sure. I would also like to know when the absolute best time to harvest is. I heard a plant will reach a point were it is at its maximum stage of buzzyness and will stay like that for 3 days – then its down hill from there. I usually harvest when the hairs get brown and the buds are nice and firm. I heard you can tell with a magnifying glass and counting falicos or something like that. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will be harvesting my outdoor plants – filling a jar with bud – putting a lid on it – give it a good shake – then smoke the crystal at the bottom of the jar. It’s way buzzy and makes all the hard work and worriesI put into growing pot seem worth it. Cheers!
How would a plant just turn male? I've never grown, and don't have much experience with it, but as long as their are no males nearby to pollenate the females, I dont think they would just turn into males... When you plant enough plants- you are bound to end up with a couple males. That is mother-natures way of ensuring that cannabis continues to thrive... not some freak sex-change operation in the middle of the plants lifecycle... I could be totally off the mark here, but I dont think thats true.
what about a hermaphrodite plant? Hermaphrodite plants contain both male and female organs. If the pollen is viable, the plant will automatically pollinate itself (selfing), resulting in a crop that can never be sinsemilla. Although most strains have the ability to become hermaphrodites under poor growing conditions, there are some cannabis plants that are genetically hermaphroditic and this disorder can not be reversed—even under optimal growing conditions. Avoid growing these genetically hermaphrodite plants because they do not help the cannabis gene pool.
I once had a hermaphrodite plant, it was budding in 2 spots and had pollen balls all over it A plant cant change sex, its genetics, a plant male or female even when its a seed a hermaphrodite is a genetic mishap in the creation of the seed
ya gender is genetic, plants don't change, but they could be hermies. www.growkind.com or whatever would be good for your other question I think.
Hermis are usually a result of you stressing the plant. The most common causes are light leaks during the plants dark period, and stress from too much nutes or pH problems. Some strains in particular are more prone to turning hermi. Many sativa varieties are pretty picky to grow, and thais are notorious. The best time to harvest depends on the type of high that you prefer. Go to radioshack and get a handheld 30x electronic microscope (like 15 bucks). Use this to look at the trichomes. Don't harvest if they are mostly clear. If they are mostly cloudy then expect a heady, up type high. After a bit longer they turn amber, harvest then if you like a relaxing lazy couchlocked type high. Or you could harvest when there is a mix of the two, for a mixed effect. Don't harvest by the hairs, some strains spit out new hairs even when they are totally done, making it too hard to judge when is the perfect time. My AK47s used to always do that. And bro I'd say that you should grab some bubbler bags and make some bubble hash,if you have bud to spare not sure how big your harvest is gonna be. Buddy of mine for got a set, soooooooo worth the $$$. Let me know if you have any other ?s Ill do my best to answer. Im no pro, but my headstash sure is kind
Your part about - “although most strains have the ability to become hermaphrodites under poor growing conditions,” makes me start to think that’s what happened to my buddies plants and they just figure the plant turned. Sometimes our weather gets cool and not so sunny. I also found the thought of a plant having the ability to change sex built into its genetics (probably for survival) kind of cool. I was also interested in – “Avoid growing these genetically hermaphrodite plants because they do not help the cannabis gene pool.” I like keeping my stains pure but never looked at the big picture – keeping the cannabis gene pool pure. Cheers!
Hey thank you I’m going for the heady up type high. That’s way cool I can pick the type of high simply by looking at those trichomes thingies. I have grow lots of pot but I don’t think I always harvest at the ideal time. My plants are in the bush so does that 30x electronic microscope come with batteries or will I have to get a good magnifying glass? Cheers.
Nah it's a little handhend microscope, takes AAAs or watch batteries I forget. Has a tiny led light too.
