So, this is my probably fifth time starting dreads in my hair. Last time i had them was only for a year and they were the first mature locks I'd ever had. These ones I've had since April (when I had taken the ones before out two months before) and theyre begining to lock decently.
My question is if there's such a thing as over maintenance? I feel as though im trying to get my hair back to how it was last time I had them and in turn is going to make my hair look shitty.
But, then again dreads are all about time - with enough time they do what they need to do.
I just felt that it didn't hurt to ask. :)

YES. Wash the dreads, dry the dreads, leave them alone. The dreads rubbing against your pillow and against the towel while drying is the only maintenance you need. Pull apart any dreads you don't want to stick together and forget they exist.

Crochet - Punches holes in your dreads, severing hairs and overdoing it can severely damage dreadlocks.

Waxes and gels - Are a con designed to stick hairs in a dreadlock shape, while slowing down the maturing process.

Palm rubbing - Completely undone as soon as you wash your hair, the only results you'll get from that is blisters.

If you really really really have to do something, wear a wool hat.

    definitely.
when i originally started researching dreads, i put in a couple of twist and rips as a test. i actually redid them a few times ~ because they weren't good enough ~ in my eyes during those moments. it was then i realised that this was not what i wanted from dreadlocks at all

the decision to go completely natural freeform for me was tied into this idea, to lose the desire to perfect things. and it's been amazing so far!

just let them be, they will never be the same as they were - but new and maybe even better

to me, dreads are the ultimate low maintenance hairstyle. wash n go. thats the hair care i can deal with! but ive never been a 'spend-ages-on-my-hair' type person anyway.
