....that I want to legally change my first name after 33 years of living with it? I have always hated my name. My mom wanted to name me Kathleen and call me Kat for short, but my aunt had her baby first and named my cousin Katherine. So I got named after my dad's favourite country singer. For years now I have considered legally changing my name to Kathleen, but I wonder how people will react...
It will just take people awhile to adjust I'm sure, but if it's something you've wanted for awhile I don't see why it would be weird.
I only know of one person to do this and I thought it was pretty neat. She actually changed her name twice. I always wondered what it would feel like to have to ask people to start calling you a different name. If you wanna do it... then go for it! There is a reason that this can be done.
id do it u can always change it back if ya want lol my parents named me after like 10 people named kathryn in my family and i HATE it if it wouldnt break my moms heart i would change it
do it. the only person i know to have changed their name originally had a hyphenated name which i dont remember, but she changed it to soleila (solaya) which i think is really nice, and everyone calls her it. i have another friend that wants to start going by her middle name, but shes had a lot of trouble getting people to call her it. so i think you need to be very consistent in correcting people, and really try to make the name your own
to say it honestly yes I think its weird, not the fact that you a want to change your name but the fact that you waited so long, what could have stopped you from changing it before?
Go for it! On the subject of names... I've never actually called my husband by his name. When we first met he was introduced with his nickname...I didn't even find out that wasn't his real name until quite a long time later, and now to use his real name would be like calling my grandparents by their first names.
lol, when I met my hubby he was introduced by his nickname and I called him that for months. Finally, one day I told him I was going to start calling him by his real name. It was really hard and awkward at first. Too funny!
Thanks guys! I'm gonna go for it. I talked with my sister, and she is going to try and organize a naming ceremony for me with some elders. I'm going to use the Native version of Kathleen, Kateri (pronounced Kat-eh-ree), to avoid confusion with a friend named Kathleen. "Hello, my name is Kateri, but you can just call me Kat." I like it.
If it'll make you happy....do it. people will adjust. I almost changed my name when I was 18 to Stella Blue. lol. I still like the name...maybe one day Ill change it too. =]
ooops just read the rest of thread...yay Kateri is nice! I can honestly say that Ive never met a Kateri before!
