Is it best to empty your lungs before inhaling?

I'm always worried that I'm going to fuck up the hit. How do you inhale and hold the most in from a pipe?

 

I have always done it like this. Take in the first hit slowly but steady. HOLD it then inhale the second while still holding the first. HOLD it then inhale any other vapors that you can. EXHALE enjoy. That gets me to hyperspace most of the times. It just depends on how your body reacts to the taste, smell and harshness of the vapors.
