If hippy is a form of religion
then consider a name for it.

I for one have always felt closer to my spiritualism the closer to nature I got.

    Naturalism.

It was a revival of spirituality. All religions had died in empty rituals.

For ME, it's simply, a "Way Of Life". I live it. I hate organized Religeon, but love GOD. I feel that IF I want him, to love ME, I have to be like him. And, Love everything around me. You, Trees, Other people no matter what race or religeon, or taste in music.

I agree, I realised only recently that my distaste to all organised religious came from the fact that I had chosen (or did it choose me?) my path, and it was the path of heart.

Darn, that is what I was gonna say! ;)
    Ok then I'll say this:
It is peaceful, compassionate, respectful of nature and differences in others.
It suggests living simply so others can simply live.
It goes againest the flow of societial norms that encourage a 'me first, success at any cost' attitude.

If anyone tries to organize it as a religion it will lose the spirituality it has.

Nope! Once you name it you are already limiting it by applying limiting parameters upon it. I think the path we take can be either an individual(ized) one or a collective one.

One of the problems that I have faced with evolving as a hippie is the fact that venue IS important. There are places where I would be up against so much friction about who I am and how I live that I'd be stifled to thrive or grow.

I think of being a hippie as a "platform" upon which areas of development continue to expand or change in direction. I cut off my hair three months ago to have wigs made of it. My hair is serving other people and I can easily grow it back. The hair isn't the identifying factor that makes me a hippie.

Besides, I like having an aura of mystery about me... and folks can always tell I'm a hippie when they hear my '73 VW Bug turn a corner!

I don't think it's a religion at all - some hippies are religious, others are not, and some are anti-religion of any kind. Thats my experience anyway! It is a very widely-encompassing term or label 'hippie' or even 'hippy'. There's no rule book, there's no agreement about either goals or how to achieve them - and many don't have any kind of spiritual agenda at all.

Thats what I meant about"naturalism", I just made it up...but thats it for me, what comes natural...being in life, love, outlook, expectations, health, attitude, fellowship, possesions, introspect, flow, experience, situation, etc.

I can't give it a name really, as it would cease to be natural as soon as I tried to harness it.

But the groove is there, and if anyone opens up to it, the vibe enters.

Just as i do not know what the term"hippy" conjuers up for others, there seems to be numerous definitions to the term.

I just go on as I go.

But to me...spiritualism is natural and religion is man-made.( and mans interpretations)
Although I make no judgement on anyone who follows a religion of anykind.

And I believe to be truely spritual no one would deem their religion
any more closer to a higher plane than any other, religion is of this plane.

There is no "Right or Wrong" there just "Is".

I make it a practice to not get into religious debates with anyone for the above reason.
I tell what I have in my life, and listen to what you share.

    I'm glad it's not.
Spirituality(to me, now) is action in good karma, and being aware of oneself.

I would say that hippie is a cultural association, that has many spiritual aspects and outgrowths, but with the lack of specific organized dogmatic theology it in itself is not a religion. However, the hippie culture has embraced many religions, as you know. The cool thing about being a hippie is that we have taken a lot from native american, hindu & buddhist philosphies. A great example would be the Farm Commune in Tennessee, with Stephen Gaskin. They embraced all religious beliefs, and welcomed all, but had theirn own "traditional hippie" ritual and ceremony. Specifically meditating together as a family each Dunsay morning service.

Or the Rainbow Family of Living Light, which has eeked out a formidable religious atmosphere and ritual and ceremony. I am a hippie minister, legally and spiritually, but I choose the Tibetan Vajrayana teachings as my central modality of worship.

    Blessings, Viv-

In line with what Templedragon says, "hippie" is primarily a cultural affiliation, distinguished, in my view, by seeking enlightenment through the use of the Supreme Sacraments. A salient characteristic of an enlightened being, I believe, is the recognition that Dualism (self/other) is an illusory ideation. This does not mean, however, that one can disregard the physical laws of the universe when one accepts Monism. Enlightenment also means a continuous discovery of the truth underlying all existance. Can one be a "hippie" physicist? Certainly, as physics underlies all existance. So, how about a "hippie" astrologer? Not in my book, because I think "hippie" means not deluding oneself by accepting mysticism/occultism as having a basis in the natural universe. Read "Millbrook" on this link http://okneoac.com/ and perhaps that might better explain my views.

Life is a form of religion, I think. I consider myself to be a Christian, although I do not belong to any organized church. As for 'hippie', I see Jesus as one, so I am one too, I suppose. I do my best to follow his example and do whatever I can for everyone who crosses my path, and to be patient and understanding with everyone. I own very little, but I try to be generous and share whatever I do have with others. I live in touch and in tune with nature and am equally comfortable on a city street or in the middle of the forest.
I used to attend church, in fact I have been to more than I care to remember, but every one of them had terrible flaws and a lot of hypocrisy, so I decided to just try o live my life as simply and as well as possible and do whatever I can to make the world a better place. In the old days, people called me a Jesus Freak, but now they just call me the old hippie lady who lives in the woods...lol.
DarrellKitchen here is a Buddhist, but to me he seems remarkably Christian, as does Matt and Heat, Shameless and Sam, and so many others here, whether they would classify themselves that way or not.
Live well, help others whenever possible, and commit random acts of kindness wherever you go. To me, that is the truest of religions and all that God or the Universe will ever expect of you.

    Peace,

teh basics of chrsitianity. love you fellow man, care about nature, and lead by example are the building blocks for hippiedom to! i think they are the same thing. but in a sense that Christianity became to corrupt so people decided to find a way so men cantt corrupt it! but they did with something called television! but hippiedom is groovin and very happy while the rest of world is mad, regretful, etc. in other words i agree with Angelgodiva.

p.s. Angel did you get your X MAs present? i wish i could jave put more emotion into it but i had to get 4 presents shipped ASAP. Sorry

    later
