I recently got scripted generic adderall and the label reads "amphetamine salts" and the documentation reads "dextroamphetamine/amphetamine". I was under the impression that adderall was a mix of dextroamphetamine and levoamphetamine. Is the pill I got a different formula used straight up amphetamine? Is "amphetamine" alone ever perscribed or is amphetamine just a catch-all name for all the different types? Appreciate the help. Thanks.
Thanks. I figured. I had gotten a little excited when the bottle just read amphetamine. haha. My doctor started me on 5mg which is nothing, I had to go to three pharmacies just to find one that carried such a low dose. What's the best way to get a normal dose? Should I say it had a mild effect on my concentration akin to a strong cup of coffee? I don't like saying I have to take 4 pills for a therapeutic effect because I think that makes me sound like a drug abuser.
It is the same. The "dextro" and "levo" refer to 2 types of the amphetamine. The "dextro" variant has a molecular arrangement which can twist polarised light to the right and the "levo" variant twists polarised light to the left. For many molecules only the levo variant has any biological effect, but Adderall might be one of the molecules where both types are biologically active. /nerdiness
What does twisting polarized light mean? I read on wiki that adderall is composed of the mirror versions of the same molecule and each have a different effect. Very interesting stuff. Why does dexedrine have a stigma as being more prone to abuse when adderall is composed of the same thing?
As far as Dexedrine goes I don't know. No sure about US brand names and not really familiar with drugs themselves. The twisting of polarised light is on of those joyous features of the universe that make science so thrilling! I'm not sure what it "means". It's been known to chemists for a long time that molecules which have what's called a "chiral centre" twist light one way or the other. A chiral centre is a carbon atom which has 4 different molecular groups attached at each of its chemical bonds. I'm sure there's a bonkers quantum description which I'll try to get my head around when I have time.
yes, it is a mixture of both isomers, but not 50/50 because that would be the racemate, which would just be referred to as amphetamine. adderall is a mixture of dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine, in several salt forms for a varied absorption characteristic. amphetamine is a racemic mixture of both enantiomers, so 50% dextro, 50% levoamphetamine. dextroamphetamine is only the dextro enantiomer of amphetamine. the product itself would therefore be 75% dextro, and 25% levoamphetamine since it is 50% dextroamphetamine and 50% racemic amphetamine. and this percentage i am pretty sure is based on the molecular weight of the amphetamine cation, not the salt since the different anions in the different salts have different molecular weight. the generic product is the same thing if it was substituted for an adderal script. Not sure about the extended release adderall, it might be still under patent, which means they would have to fill the script with the brand name product. then tell your doctor that 5mg is not effective and that you need a higher dose. with a higher milligram pill you would need less pills. 5mg really isn't much.
