Would anybody here classify being drunk as a psychedelic experience?

Out of all drugs that alter your consciousness, some are psychedelic and some are not. I've been trying to formulate an official definition of "psychedelia" and what I've come up with is this: psychedelic drugs are those drugs that alter your consciousness by altering what you perceive to be reality, whereas non-psychedelic drugs are those that simply alter how you feel (mood, energy level, etc.).

I've always felt that alcohol fell into the latter category. But then there were times when I was so pissed out of my tree that it started feeling a little like weed (short-term memory not working, everything feeling "unreal", not being able to pay attention, etc.). Also, caffein and alcohol in combination puts me in a state in which amazing insights (or what I think are amazing) come flooding into my mind much like while blazed on pot.

Anyway, what do you think? What category of consciousness alteration should alcohol fall under?

it's just a CNS depressant. sure, if you get too fucked up it will alter your senses a lot, but has nothing in common with psychedelics (aside from being a drug).

The way I differenciate between psychedelics and non psycheledics it that-
    Psychedelics increase/heighten/lengthen the senses
and non psychedelics dull the senses- eg alchohol

I think just about any drug could be psychedelic in the right circumstances. I'm sure people have had mental breakthroughs at times while really drunk, due to decrease inhibitions, etc. Some people say speed is psychedelic in some ways. But, on the whole I agree with the above posts which say that psychedelics enhance the senses, whereas for the most part alcohol dampens them. Therefore, I say alcohol is not a psychedelic, even though most mind altering substances probably can be a bit "psychedelic" in certain situations.

    ^yeah your right actualy
Say for example you drink a whole bottle of tequila and are fully smahed, and your vision lags and you see the streetlights sway across. <that would be considered quite trippy, even if its not the classic trippiness- colours and patterns etc.

by that definition a rainbow is a psychodelic experience

try this in adark room sit with a candle between yourself & a freinmd or yourself & a mirror (flame should be about chesh hight not between faces) look into eachothers eyes or your own in a mirror ..relax.. youll halucinate like crazy & see the faces become non human.. is that an optical illusion or a psychodelic experience?

psychodelic xperiences are not just vissial impairment but a higher percepton including a higher perception of yoyur own mind, your thoughts

Drunkenness is not a psychedelic experience. To me, a true psychedelic experience comes from what Mother Earth has given us that can life-alter us in any way. Marijuana, mushrooms, peyote, meditation, spirituality, heck, even sex! Stuff like alcohol and LSD I don't view as truly psychedelic in the sense soaringeagle is giving. Nature did not give us these things, we did.

Soaringeagle you are right <Many people associate psychedelic with halucinations and feeling cool textures, hearing weired noises etc
But actualy there is a whole mental aspect which is often ignored.

a rainbow is psychedelic in the way that it has awsome colours,
But it is not a psychedelic experience, neither is alchohol

A psychedelic experience is simply any experience that expands the mind. Alcohol can expand the mind, depending on the situation, so I say it depends on individual experience.

thats why i think its funny when people trip & spend the entire trip watching spongebob squarpants

are they really having a psychodelic experience? the mind expantion?.
or simply enhancing the mundane without fully experiencingthe true psychodelic experience? the experience is a journey through the mind
watching spongebob for 8 hours is shutting off the mind

you can take the drug & not experience the experience or you can experience the experience & not take the drug

so what is the true psychodelic experience but an opening of the mind?

You're right. A psychedelic experience can be achieved without the help of drugs. Drugs simply show you the way and it's up to you to get what you want out of it. Psyches can be used for entertainment and/or enlightenment. It is all dependant on your mood. If you want a deep and meaningful experience, then a deep and meaningful experience you will have; but if you just want to have fun, then that's all that will happen.

Alcohol can have mind-expansion qualities, when used in the right environment/manner, but most people just want to get fukt up when they drink alcohol. The more you drink, the less mind-expanding it will be, and the more fukt up you will get, but if you just drink a little bit, then it will alter your mind just enough to change your thinking and bring you to some pretty useful realizations. Personally, I just drink to get drunk, but I do realize the potential it has, when used in a certain way.

In a strictly technical sense, I'm inclined to say that it could be. For me, if the experience showed me a whole new perspective on reality, especially if that perspective could count as nothing but a whole different reality, then I'd say it's psychedelic (so seeing stars after hitting your head with a hammer - no; schizophrenia - of course).

The problem seems to be that no one in this thread has exactly the same definition of "psychedelic". That makes it hard to agree on what counts and what doesn't.

ØØØH sorry but you are the alone one who does not agree with the others..
Unless you drink a bottle of napoleon wine from long ago and who contain mushrooms you aint going to get any psychodelic experience. ( tried it, beleive me thats a shaman experience, flying like an eagle above a town i had bnever been into, but seeing it from the sky, while walking the streets..) among other things.
Schizophrenia is not mind expending and is mostly fear expending. (and life shortening)
A shcizophrenic attack can vary in forms from serious to minor, and real crisis, but for all it is obsesiv idea and paranoia who is the main thread.
Mny people using psychodelic substances are doomed to experience schyzophrenic and other mental illness state, as all mental illness are in all human beings as potentially active, and can be triggered anytime by any trauma or shok or stress , like moving to another city or starting a new job or seing a car accident or being in one or seeing soemone getting kiled, or loosing oyur job or gf or bf or family member, and all that kind.
You can become parano by it or psychotic for a short period of time, from weeks to months and even years. then return to normal whith psycholdelic stuff the experience vary from hours to days, if it turn sour into a bad trip, with mental illness like experiences. Some can get you in that state for good, like LSD, with no ticket back.
But the mind expending process demand preparation, thats also why the guy who created LSD only tried it on people he had preapared for it and under supervision.
All trips must be prepared or they will not have the psychodelic effects forementioned above.
And of course there is the mind expension that do not resort to any use of drugs, but to being connected naturaly to ones higher mind/perception and being a damn good receiver unit.
Being a drunkard and hallucinating has a latin name for it called delirious tremens, that is only used to describe that state in drunkard. Usually occur a few months before death occur.
Thats the state when the brain has gone fishing.
You can say htat in some cases the guy is having a psychodelic experience but it cant be mind expanding. The reason why you get drunk is that oyur brainn is out of balance, adn try to come back to it. Its losing its reference points. if oyu do it often and are sensible, meaning are born poor in addictive enzyme, who could protect you from addiction to the stuff, you will both react very fast to the effect of alcohol, and get very fast and strongly addicted to it.
It is because your brian cant refound its original state of balance and beleive that the drunk state is that state and will urge the body to get some booz so it can function properly. Thats an order from the CPU to the software, and as a rule the software is going to get the CPU some booz no matter what it takes.
And thats how you get a drunkard.
It isnt mind expending but mind shrinkning, in fact also in the physical sense of the word.
Like the lever, it will first expend a lot,a dn then shrink to nothing.
A sleeping pill can alos get oyu dizy, but you cant call it a psychodelic effect.
Some get visions, but then they were using that special alcohol made with a plant and burned out, like gaugin and van gogh did.
Thats pretty lethal too and hallucinogenic. It gives visions but is very destructiv.
Cant recall the name of htat alcohol right here and now.
    many poets took it.

Yeah thats absynt but definitly not a cure for orms with 60% alcohol in it or more!
Thats how the alcohol is made, put in a spoon and warmed up,and drink like that. % times a day and you are alcoholic within a month, dead within few years.
It gives hallicinations and is a very strong alcohol. Better take weeds instead. Thats more save.
Its color is green. Fluorescent green.

We're not talking about alcoholism. We're talking about single drinking experiences. Alcohol CAN have mind expansion qualities, which can be classified as "psychedelic experiences". While it may not be the classic psychedelic experience, any method of opening the mind to new ways of thinking is, technically, a psychedelic experience, and alcohol definitely changes one's perception and can open your your mind to new ideas and feelings/realizations, so I would, personally, consider it to be useful, in some situations and, therefore, slightly psychedelic.

Psychedelia doesn't necessarily have to include hallucinations. Way to go, in regards to sounding like a know-it-all though;)

Absinthe - illegal in most countries; available in Prague, one of the world's finest cities but in general alcohol does not produce vision, colors, or design except those pink elephants as a result of not having the substance control your mind and body.
