I don't know about immature, but I think it's stupid when a news article or segment says, "the f word," or "the n word." By even saying the letter, people know what the word is and will think or say it out loud, so why not just say it. By treating words like they're bad or not meant to be said, we give their bad influence more power.
I always cuss in front of kids without thinking about it. I just really don't see a big deal. Words are words; defining them as "bad" is a social construct. "War is a bad word. Fucking is not." I read that in a Judy Blume book once.
Its good to watch what you say around kids. When they are older they will make up there minds. When im talking with adults I really could care less. Some people take offence to it, I usually then don't have to talk to them. Not that im trying, just some people are like that. Words are only words. Im not telling you to go fuck your mother so relax, im just saying that guy last night pissed me the fuck off. See? It's just a fucking word.
yeah, i think you could definitely argue immaturity. i don't generally cuss in front of children, but it's not because there's anything wrong with the words, just because society pretends there's something wrong with them and i pick my battles.
Damn, my example turned this thread into being about swearing around children. I just don't see how picking out words and calling them bad could be anything but immature (and kind've insane)
I love when the news says "expletive" in quoting someone...the word "expletive" has more syllables than any word they could be blocking, so whats the point?
when i said "i don't generally cuss in front of children" i could have just as easily said "i don't generally cuss in situations where it is considered socially unacceptable to do so." i feel the same way you do. the whole thing makes absolutely no sense to me. expletive-3 motherfucker-4 i really don't think they're saying "expletive" because it's more efficient anyway. if they were, they would be saying "la" and the news report every day would be "la la la la la la la la la la la la la."
I knew someone would say motherfucker. I just find it funny that they use it...and sometimes in excess. We are a lazy society and even our words have gotten lazier, so why replace swears with the word "expletive" when there are much simpler words to use like "la" "Expletive that expletive. She's such an expletive!"
Censorship just delays a child's understanding of the world. They are there for the convenience of the parents, not for the benefit of the children. Instead of hiding the fact that people die, have sex, and swear, why not try teaching them why that happens?

Exactly! It's terrible parenting at it's worst, and it's done in a way that basically forces EVERYONE to cooperate.
That's why I love this weekly segment on the Jimmy Kimmel show :2thumbsup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7wxRV9Zs3o"]YouTube - Jimmy Kimmel & Unnecessary Censorship! Hotwater
it's sometimes confusing how they decide exactly what to censor too. like when you hear "assbleep" or "bleepdamnit" or "bleep of a bitch."
I personally think it's funny when kids pick up some of those words and choose to use them at just the perfect time and place...right or wrong...it's funny as shit. lol I don't think anyone should be offended by curse words...expletives..etc...unless someone is being mean and abusive with those words towards you. But...in general conversation...it's not hurting anything.
Tell that to the comics writers of the 50s that were out of jobs overnight. Or Galileo's corpse (or anyone else the Christians condemned for heresy). Censorship and liberalization both can happen very quickly, or very slowly. But if you ask me, liberalization is what's been happening slowly over time.
