I'm a dumb American. I need a map before I can even begin to answer this question. Is it part of the European continent?

depends on how you define europe, definician wise.
you can say east or west of the bosphorus, but that's really just an exagerated bay, by which i mean, go far enough north, and that's not more then a third of the way, europe and asia, are one contiguous chunk of land. it really makes much more sense to not try to maintain the fiction of europe and asia in any physical way, being seperate continents. even africa, the only water seperating it from eurasia is a human constructed passageway. same goes for seperating north from south america.

now eurasafrica is seperated from norhsouth america by ocean on either side, likewise australia and the island nations of all ocians.
so to me, other then those actually seperated all the way around by oceans, these non-seperated land masses are non-seperated.
