Source Has anyone seen this movie? Is hollywood promoting the Bush polocy toward Iran? Or is it just a fucking movie people?
That's idiotic. As simple as that. When have Iranians turned into politically correct fat American types?
Well, perhaps it actually IS offensive to their culture and perhaps it DOES provoke animosity against Iran. I don't know - I haven't seen it. But I don't know that it makes sense to just disregard the concern - especially in a climate where right-wingers would LOVE to drum up more support for attacking middle eastern nations.
ALL Hollywood movies have an agenda to them. They are loaded with predictive programming and subliminal messages. They help to subconsciously shape the reality of those who watch them, hence what we call our "culture." I haven't seen this movie, so I cannot say what it's promoting, but I am sure there is some veiled message within. Hollywood is a Pentagon/CIA front, and has always been.
People don't take movies to heart as much as they are conditioned subliminally. That is the genius of Hollywood movies.
The idea that a country which hosts holocaust denial conferences would whine about a movie based on actual historical events is a bit ridiculous.
Well China banned all the Bond films bar the last one. It never suprises me what some countries find offensive or socialy disruptive.. I bet the press in Iran works the same way it does everywhere - OTT promoting their agendas etc etc etc. I think we had the same with a few films about American / Scotish independance [e.g Braveheart and the othe film with Mel Gibson}.
Islamic Clerics did not like the movie Bruce Almighty either. Something about a mere mortal appropriating the powers of God.
Look at it like this: If you and 10,000 of your friends got the crap kicked out of you by 300 half naked guys wearing red togas, you'd be pissed too. Sit down, shut up, pray 7 times a day and watch something else.
This is a country that went into an irrational uproar over some cartoons. They vilify Jews and Americans on a daily basis in all their media relentlessly and need no reason, rational, or further motives whatsoever to be “pissed”, they are far beyond “pissed”.
I think movies serve four purposes, among others, a lot of the time. 1. to soften people up to certain concepts. 2. By placing certain events in a movie, people are under the impression that "nah, that can't happen, it was just in a movie." It kind of places certain concepts out of the realm of possibilities, events that are indeed very real and possible. Its a good way of displacing certain possibilities into the realm of fantasy (1984, ect.) 3. Or it overly simplifies certain possibilities. Look at V for Vendetta. As powerful as the evil side was, it was overly simplified side. I also never got the feeling that the govt. was to overwhelmingly strong and V's abolishment seemed overly simplistic, if you think about it. Don't you think toppling a corrupt govt would take much more effort and more man power and time? That even if something like this were to happen in real life, people would be conditioned that it would not take much effort to overcome. It allows people to place hope in easier than needed efforts. 4. A movie hits the right chord (V again with corrupt government) but gives the wrong details on why this is fact. I guess a form of mis information to make people feel empowered. But thats just what I thought while in the shower. I think a lot of things are more subtle. Certain flicks had little scenes spliced into one frame (movies in a theater are 24 frames per second) so an eye can not detect something that quick (.04 seconds). But the brain does pick up on it. A lot of things can be toyed with with just one frame. somethings even run at 60 frames per second (so a frame is 0.16 seconds) for tv, increasing the oppurtunity to pass off a fast one on the unexpected viewer with just a single frame.
I think we over do this . Yeah it has pissed off Iranian officials. I imagine a whole host of inocuouse 'Hollywood' films are not liked in Iran - even ones with a U rating on them [Iran's authorities have banned imported films promoting secularism, feminism, unethical behaviour, drug abuse, violence or alcoholism]. It will not stop Iranian people seeing it [pirate DVD]. Was it a vast right wing conspiracy ? i think not. It has some touchy subject matter - that is all. I suspect Iranian cinema is rammed full of films that depict others in a not to positive light - so bloody what. Hollywood a CIA front ? hehehehe well this is a film based on a graphic novel written not by 'Hollywood'. 'Hollywood' stopped making films a very long time a go. Most if not all films are made buy people outside of 'Hollywood' and distributed buy vast coporate media groups . 'Hollywood' is not sending out hidden messages - any messages are from the film makers themselves - who come from all over the world. Carlfloydfan maybe it puts too a high expectation on 'reality'. I imagine vast swathes of people thought America has hundreds of jets on standby awaiting possible attack - and can get there in minutes. Clearly that is not true. At the end of the day these are just films and we will all read whatever the hell we like into them.
sure, maybe thats all mbw. But at the same time, I think it would be naive to think there isn't some deeper more hidden message in some of these movies that remains beyond our concious sight but still impacts us. after all, it is done so perfectly, that it comes off as natural, not even noticeable. Hollywood, like many other companies, know their customers, they know how to sell things to us, they know us very well and what we like. They know how to market to us. as for the single frame, some of these things are hard to catch and seperate from the rest of the movie, it is ONE frame! It has been done in the past. With a 2 hour movie, one frame (0.04 seconds or .016 sec for TV) is kind of hard to find even if you shift through the frames. And the key is subtle. Its not like it will be a vagina for a frame somewhere in the middle of V for Vendetta. Not that obvious. Think more subtle and basically fitting in with the movie. The eye doesn't catch it but the brain does. I don't think many movies would do it now a days, I think it has even become illegal to do such a thing, cause movies use to use it for advertisement. but that just forces companies to be less obvious. mbw, maybe you sorta missed my point looking at post 15?
People are laughing at me suggesting that Hollywood is a Pentagon front, when the History Channel even did a program on it. Hollywood is a major force in culture creation and always has been.
Hollywood goes along with whatever sells, such as the Rambo movies during the Reagan administration. .
I laughed when I heard about this. I mean the movie is even based on a true event (though very exaggerated), and the Spartans are, well, Spartan. At least 90% of the people who see the movie don't even know what it is about, and of the 10% who do I doubt any of them would even think it has anything to do with Iran. How many people would be able to locate where Persia was on a map if you caught them coming coming out of the movie? Maybe 1% of 1%. People don't even care about any of the politics, they're just there to see a small group of unbelievably jacked guys hand a much larger group their own asses on a silver platter.
War of The Worlds .......Star Wars The African Queen..... Cassablanca. The Wizard of OZ some Great propaganda films! .
