You could read Aron Ralston's book "Between a Rock and a Hard Place." It's what inspired the movie "127 Hours." I saw the movie first and it really made me want to go hike that canyon (this year, hopefully) so I picked up the book hoping that it would be loaded with helpful tips and geography for the area. The book is NOT written in a style I can tolerate...maybe you can enjoy it though. You can tell it wasn't written by a "writer" because it looks like he overused the Thesaurus on Word. It goes into massive detail...but he uses words that you have to look up in a science book to describe a freakin' plant. Not because he's being detailed and accurate, but because he didn't want to say "broad leaves" or that sort of thing. You probably get what I mean. Prose should be simple and spare, IMO.
Well, Aaron wasn't a writer. He's a adventure junkie, with a story to tell. I respect that he didn't hire the bulk of the writing out, but told his own story. (Disclaimer, I've danced at many a Cheese show with him. I once whipped him with a hoop when I was learning) gypsy,I'm sure you have found Wild by Cheryl Stayed.
