ok you guys we got the keys to our new house and they say we can paint or wallpaper any way we want as long as it can be coverd with one coat of offwhite paint when we leave. any suggestions on light paints and good colors! I think we are going to get glow in the dark paint and fix up my little girls room with tons of stars and stuff!!!!! But I wanna do something really cool like baby blue in my sons room with clouds and maybe John Lennon lyrics in silver all over his walls ...... any suggestions or other ideas for the other rooms, there is still a kitchen, living room and master bedroom to be decorated!! any maybe ideas for decorating my back yard and my front doorway??????????????
were not allowed to paint or wallpaper in out townhome either so what I did was staple gun some really cool fabrics to the walls! its perfect and not permanent and looks great!
oh wait i read yours wrong hahah ....you ARE allowed to paint...but anyways the fabric still looks cool
i mos def wanna get some fabric and make big curatins for the wall in the living room, theres a shitload of windows!!!!!!
i bet youll make it beautiful! I made some huge curtains for my bedroom...i suggest blackout underneath i love that ....you can just close them and fall asleep at any hour of the day because it makes your room straight up black haha i love it. ....the only problem you wake up way late sometimes because you cant see the sun....
i used to hang sleeping bags over my windows and call em blackout curtains LOL maybe this time i will go for the real thing!!!
I like the fabric idea! I would also suggest using light paint so it can be covered later; like sage green or butter yellow. They can be fun colors!!!! A friend of mine painted her walls a sage green and then hung up bamboo beaded curtains all along one wall; it looks great!!!!!
I always tend to find going for a neutral colour on the walls gives you room to play around with the furniture and fixings. The house we're moving into can't be re-decorated but it's all white, so we're going mad with lampshades, rugs, curtains, tables etc. I'm mad about original 60's designs, huge bubble lampshades and Eames era lighting, big psychedelic fabrics and everything. I love the Lennon idea, with blue walls and clouds and sunshine, it would be so peaceful. The master bedroom could be a calm space, a place for you guys to relax in so really pretty earthy tones and lots of nice textures, you could make a lovely big beadspread from some really luxurious fabric and have lots of cushions.
OOOOoooo, you lucky thing. Interior design happens to be one of my greatest pleasures. When I walked into the nasty little apartment I live in, it needed serious work. Nine months later, everyone who walks in compliments it. Such a great feeling. Anyways, one of my favourite suggestions is shun convention. People think some colours clash, but I think they're full of it! Use colour, be bright and definitely make the place a reflection of yourself and your partner. (oh and the little one on the way, PS congrats! ) In my opinion, white walls only work for kitchens and bathrooms. You want your living spaces warmer than that. Curtains, draped fabrics and mirrors add little touches. I took a full length mirror and hung it the wrong way (across) above my piano. It looks fab and everyone loves it. Oh, and candle scounces! You can't go wrong with them. Oh dear, I seem to have rambled on a little. Oh well. Have fun and good luck. Be sure to post some pix, too. ~Bella
Ooooh, sounds like fun! I love interior decorating! I haven't done much with the house we're living in now, even though I originally stated that I would when we bought it. Just one of those things, never got around to it, too busy with the kids, and now that we're planning on moving to a bigger house (we totally need the space!) I don't want to sink a whole lot of money into it. We're planning on ripping out the carpeting sometime before we move because there are fab hardwoord floors in here that would be cheaper to do than recarpet. With having three little ones, our once nice carpeting is looking shabby, so we want to fix things up for when we go to sell. I also, months and months ago, found that my kids had been tearing off bits of wallpaper in the kitchen. It didn't bother me, because I totally hated the wallpaper from the moment we saw the house. It's all country-like, and I am not a fan of that look. Anyway, one day I get the bright idea to start tearing down all of the wallpaper. The kids helped and had a blast throwing it everywhere. *laughs* But after that, I lost interest, so here my kitchen sits with crappy looking walls that need either painted or wall-papered. My hubby does not want to go the wallpaper route for some dumb reason, as he thinks it's going to be too involved. Huh?! I was planning on sponge-painting the walls, but the problem is, my cabinets have stained glass windows in them, and the color scheme limits me. I don't want to use any of those colors. I'm wondering if we can remove the stained glass and put in clear glass? My hubby keeps trying to remind me that I don't need to go overboard since we'll more than likely be moved out of here within a year, so I know he's right. I have to remind myself to save what I really want to do for our next home. Which, I already have planned out. I also need to get a hang of my sewing machine so I can make curtains to match.
paint what you want, but plan to get it covered white before you move. The LL said one coat of white. If you lay on two, all is goodause the third coat will cover.
For your daughter, powdery pink would be really cute. Or if she's not into girly colours, maybe light purple, light yellow, or light green. But if she does like pink, these would go really cute around the edge of the ceiling (well actually they'd go with all the colours, but especially well with pink!): These lights are cute; as are these: I think those're sequins. Both of those strands of lights (actually all of the stuff I'm posting! I get catalogues from 'em all the time, even though I've never ordered anything from them and they're waaay out of my budget, but I find cute stuff in that magazine and go out and find cheaper versions) are from pbteen.com and are kind of expensive, but you can get really awesome stuff from Cost Plus: World Market or Target (love that store!!!). And this shelf would look really cute, 'cause it's all girly and dainty: As for your son's room (and/or your daughter, if she doesn't like the girly ones above), since you said light blue, maybe these shelves for his books and toys: I love these pillows (click link) (the tables) btw if you walk into my room it looks like the Victorian era, so of course my picks aren't really psychedelic and tend to be more girly...(Come on, I have lacy runners on my bureau and doilies all over the place...)
I say for your daughters room, purple and green.... if she likes...but like a light limeish green and a lilacy purple, and coordinbte accordingly... or let them choose. I wouldnt go with silver paint, because it will show through on a white coat, its different chemicals.
Congrats on your new house. I have a few ideas that i can help you with but I would first have to see it. I did a few interior design classes and going to college for interior design. maybe if you scanned the plans of your house I can help.
I'm toying with nailing a panel or two on my son's wall to paint with a mural. We also rent, and I've yet to get ll's clearance for new paint in new colors. I have GOT to paint ythe stairs to the basement, they are porch grey and I can't see where one ends and the next begins.
