At my prior job I took this personality test called insights. It was 25 questions with 5 answers. You had to answer the most and least like you. A couple days later it printed out about a 30 page report on me. It's training on how to work with different personality types. Here's the question: one of my potential weaknesses was and I quote: "Maybe to smooth for some people" I didn't know whether to laugh or cry but it got good laughs from the workers. What does that actually mean?
I kind of had an idea of what it means but had difficulty trying to explain it so I looked it up in a thesaurus to give me some ideas of how to explain, this is what it said. suave, urbane, sophisticated, polished, debonair, courteous, gracious, smooth-tongued, glib, media-savvy, persuasive, slick, oily, ingratiating, unctuous, smarmy The first part of the list seems more like positive traits, about mid way it seems to become more negative. I think that if they think you are "too smooth," it might be closer to thinking you are smarmy. Here is the definition for that. smarmy | ˈsmärmē | adjective informal ingratiating and wheedling in a way that is perceived as insincere or excessive I am not implying that you are this way but thats what it means, hope that helps.
