Are you cutting your nails correctly? You should be cutting them strait accross and not at any angle.

In my case, the ingrown toenails were a predisposition. Both big toenails were simply too wide for the toe. It wasn't too much of a problem in summer, being unshod and all, but for my job shoes are usually required in winter so the toenails would flare up. I went in on the 5th of this month to have them surgically correct the problem. They killed the sides of the nail bed after ripping out the ingrown portion of the nail so that the problem will never return, unless I smash the toe or something.

If your problem is severe enough, I would totally recommend you get a podiatrist to check it out! Hope this helps~

I use a very sharp and fine nail scissors and then a #11 Xacto blade to keep the side of the nails trimmed.

Every couple of years or so, however, it will grow in closer to the base, where I cannot reach, which means a visit to the doc to have them surgically remove the offending side.

They were far more of a problem twenty years ago when I used to wear shoes. Then, I'd often have to visit the doc twice a year.
