Indian chess grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju became the world's youngest ever chess champion at 18, after beating defending champion China's Ding Liren.at the 14 game world chess championship competition held in Singapore. He also beat Kasparov's record of being the youngest world champion at 22 when he beat Karpov in 1985.

He is the second Indian world chess champion after Vishwanathan Anand who is a five-time world champion.

This year also saw both the Indian men and women's team win the chess Olympiad golds , and Dommaraju's triumph is the icing on the cake for Indian chess.
