Hi I've been trying to meditate for a while and i have expiremented with many different kinds of incense. I've read that the type of incense that you burn could effect your mood while meditating. Do you have any preferences?
    THANKS

The problem with incense is it's still smoke. An irritant.

Burn it before meditation and then let the area air out abit. Meditation isn't easy if you're eyes are burning.

Nag Champa is the universal favorite. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nag_Champa

Good quality sandlewood is a gift from the Gods.

    Burn cannabis in an urn
    and sit with that

    incense triggers memories
so, if you sit, with a smell, for many many days
that smell will always remind you
    of your buddha nature.

cannabis will actually Teach you about meditation,
    if you listen.

    otherwise,
    godspeed.

I have a thing for white sage... smooth and doesn't leave a stale odor of any sort.
Yeah I don't have it burning that late at night.. but the house has a faint smell of it running through.. which is perfect! :D:D

That is ridiculous. Even if you remembered all the way back to your original incarnation, you still have to figure out who "you" are and go beyond the mind. The only way to do that is through deep introspection. You have an equal chance of waking up as an elephant (which is entirely possible, though very unlikely) as you do of learning about meditation from cannabis.

Back to the OP- Scents can provoke a relaxed response from the body, or remind a person of a peaceful feeling if a particular scent is correlated with a peaceful experience/memory. It's helpful to have a relaxed body because your "guard" is down and you can better focus on the thought on which you're meditating. It also helps a person to have a regular meditation practice if they ritualize it. So maybe your ritual is lighting some incense, then meditating for 30 minutes.

However, to use a scent as something more than a fairly weak tool to help with meditation is not going to get you very far.

I love Nag Champa, but I have also found a great new incense from hippieshop.com that I like (and I am burning right now! :p): Bob Marley incense! But as far as meditation with incense, I would have to agree with xexon on incense being an irritant for some. But some people may find that incense works with meditation, but probably in a well aired room. I can use about one stick of incense and then my head kinda hurts... but it releases a great smell for relaxiation!

I like Riwo Sang Chod incense sticks not powder. Tibetan stuff can be sweet but the meatier smelling stuff is better. It has a campfire sort of smell meant to warm the hearts of cold pilgrims. Moreover it's meant to pacify all spirits.

Also, aloes are some of the most expensive incenses in the world. The japanese make them. Look it up for some revitalizing scents.

I really enjoy Mushroom Vision by Liquid Blue. You can buy it at Spencer's, headshops, or online. Almost anything by Liquid Blue or Wildberry is good.

Cherry Vanilla, One Love, Patchouli, and Rasta are all sweet-smelling scents that promote relaxation and well-being.

Nag Champa is good... a classic. Also, if you like Nag Champa, Super Hit is good. Burn it to enhance zodiac traits.

satya sai baba super hit (1st cousin of nag champa by same manufacturers) takes the lead for me. i was a nag fan for 4 years until i discovered super hit. i still burn the occassional nag, but super hit is practically designed for meditation and smells absolutely divine. comes in an impressively decorated box with the words 'helps to increase the positive and reduce the negative parts of all zodiac signs' printed on the side...

    i buy them from this shop;

guise it depends on how you react to incense

is it emotional as some have suggested
    physical getting irratated

Personally I never use incense as it makes it just a little harder to breath, especially if you have ashma.

    dude... 1 word... frankincense....

thats all you gotta do haha. frankincense is where its at.

But on a more serious note, find what YOU like... any scent that puts you in a peaceful state of mind is what you should use. Be it Nag Champa or Febreeze... Use what is right for YOU! do some expirimenting and find what you like :)

DHOOP incense from tibet and india is a relaxant and not an irritant. It doesn't have a wooden stick supporting the herbals. Nag champa-many varieties. There is a wonderful web site that has the best meditation and healing incense. Google hither and yon incense-
