everyone and everything will be forgotten, some buildings will still stand, other than that, you and me will be a distant memory, not even to be remembered by our family members

Your math is way off. You will still be remembered by your future gradchildren in 100 years.

Also, I don't think that most buildings are going anywhere.

    Please try again.

I don't know if I believe that. While it may be true in some cases, I don't think it is universal. I have pictures of my ancestors hanging on one of the walls at my place. The oldest being of the first member of my family to come to Minnesota back in 1858. He is known to me and not forgotten. I even know the name of some of my family members in every generation back to the 1570s.

I have pictures of ancestors from the 1800s as well. My mom is a geneologist.

I think humans are instinctually drawn to the past. We passed down stories before the written word, we started recording history with the advent of the written language. People travel thousands of miles to see ruins or to seek out the towns of their ancestors.

Barring some sort of apocalypse in the very near future, I don't see how this could be possible. Plus, many homes and buildings can last far longer than 100 years. Some structures can last thousands and thousands of years.

My family is big on genealogy, and remembering family members throughout the generations. Also, most buildings these days could probably last a few hundred years, with upkeep.

Having a picture or knowing names of ancestors does not mean they are remembered. You might have a name or a picture taken at some point of their life, but you have no clue how they were really like. How they talked, what occupied their minds, who they socialised with, their idiosyncrasies etc. etc. In that way they surely are forgotten.

I have letters written by some as well as written descriptions of personalities by others. Regardless, I know who they are and some of the actions they performed in life. Yes, bird, they are very much remembered.

My mind keeps reading genealogy as gynecology. I've read this thread twice now, so it's come up 4 times, and I still read gynecology.

Think I might be needing some..

    Edit:

On my stepmoms side of the family... they've been climbing the family tree, and they visited some distant relatives who have 2 paintings of a grea great great great whatever, all the way from the 1700's. I thought that was pretty fuckin' cool. Hectic blast from the past! and pretty good paintings too :0
