So I'm watching the news yesterday and (I'm sure some of you have already heard this!) but, these different geologist and scientist and members of numerous other organizatons were talking about the hurricanes and why this years were so deadly and so large. What I heard not only made me go "Well know shit! Cut another tree,Put up another ozone killing power plant!" but also made me think "WOW! maybe we now have a window of opportunity to really wake people up!" .... See just last year and every year sence the 50's and not really sence the 1900's have we had such large hurricanes with so much distruction and the reason for it now is ozone depletion... When hurricane Katrina hit Scientist wanted to know what made this one a catagorey 4 and 5 instead of the 1 and 2 we usually have and when they went to the gulf stream they took measurements of the water temp and found that it has risen exactly 1 degree in the past year causeing much stronger surges in hurricane activity and pushing them to be bigger and faster... From what they said this happens every 40 years due to ozone depletion the water will rise and it will continue to happen until we do something to help mother earth rebuild itself and not take away from what is left. This means that in 40 years OR SOONER the is no certainity it wont happen before than that if the water temp rises just one more degree then we could cause more than just a hurricane! I mean 5 is as big as it gets folks!!! So my question is what is it gonna take in this world before people start to really listen to mother earth?
screw it man, we're fucked any way, i started a little group which cares about the environment in our youth club about five months ago but what can we do... the only way is to get everyone going, all over the world, but unfortunately, i can't do that hope there is somebody who can do that out there and i hope he or she will do it
So what thats it? Just we are fucked and for get about it? That is what got us here in the first place....
all you can do is change yourself and the way in which you live, and hope that people will see you and change themselves. you say all this, but i bet you ride in a car and use electricity. change yourself. once you have completely stopped harming the ozone, you may then help others to do the same.
This year's phenomenon does not mean we're fucked. You said it yourself, weather moves in cycles. Haven't you ever heard of the "100 year flood"? Life, stock markets, trends and weather all move in cycles - we just happen to be experiencing a particularly violent trrend this year; it will subside.
The person who posted this thread said herself that there were hurricanes like this 100 years ago. So now I ask: did the human race not survive those?
Even if we do not know for sure that the effect is caused by ozone depletion (although I believe that it is), the prudent thing is to make changes to lower the levels. That means running the price of gas up to prices that will provide economic incentive for companies to make transportation that will not add to the problem. Alternatively, it means passing laws to force the companies to produce the product. We all can do our part by letting the companies know that we would buy such transportation if they made it. We can also annoy our congress people and senators.
well thats freaky and scary. it will take the end of the world for people to realize whats happening and that we need to change a lot of things. but by then its going to be too late. which is so sad. damn i wanna be something that fixes it, but idk wat. i think everyone can do their own thing to help in some way and if everyone does something, then it can help a lot ya know. at least some people will open their eyes, peace~
Seems to me that the hurricanes is the "topic du jour" until the media finds something else to beat up. I don't think you'll be hearing much more about them. But by the same token, we definitely need to create more awareness of environmental issues. Way back in 89-90 when we first woke up re the hole in the ozone layer, there was a massive media campaign about it. It caused a lot of change for the good, but everyone out there needs to be reminded that we have to keep going! We have become complacent again!
100 year hurricanes, and Wilma is coming too, Fred....Tsunamis, bird flu, Pakistan earthquakes, hmmmm, do you think Mother Earth is having a temper tantrum? I am definitely not making light of the situation(s), just making light of people who think it has no import. I do not worry, I live for today. Be Here Now. California, does governor Arnold have an evacuation plan for you? I would ask.
purplesage, I did not aim my snide comment at you, truly. they ARE a topic du jour, for obvious reasons. I'm thinking more of the Rush Limbaugh-type followers who say, "hell, no, there is no global warming, this is just a 100 year occurence. We must progress in our mission to defoliate and rape the Earth to power those SUV's and any other technology that makes us more money."
