I got this as one of my five for $20 at Blockbuster and really enjoyed it. I enjoy about anything with Sigourney Weaver, but the story was good and except for a little directorial problem of putting all the revelatory information at the last few minutes of the movie, it was an enjoyable visit with the troubled Travis family.

Our movie starts with the younger brother Tim Travis (Emile Hirsch) relating how his older bro, Matt (Kip Pardue) the good looking, athletic, fastest swimmer on the high school team is troubled by all the attention and actually hates swimming. However, he is the pride of his father Ben (Jeff Daniels) to the neglect of Tim.

Well, as it says on the DVD cover, there is a family tragedy and the main players for the rest of the movie are Ben, Tim and his mother Sandy (Sigourney Weaver) who often appears to be the rock of the family except for her sometimes ex-Hippie irresponsibility.

Everyone in this family has problems, from the distant father, flaky mother and Tim, a quiet reflective guy who has to deal with the usual high school stuff plus the family probs.

He has a G/F who says she loves him but he doesn't love her. His best bud Kyle (Ryan Donowho) is always doing some pill or another and often turns Tim on to some controlled substance. Guess it is the normal 21st Century high school angst.

Normally, I like more escapist movies, but this was really entertaining and all the pieces do come together where this family works out their problems.

It is an indie film and you likely did not see it in theatre as the "wide release" in the US was to 24 theaters. It was also the directorial debut of 24-year-old Dan Harris who also wrote the story when he was 22. (Can you imagine his insecurities in directing Weaver and Daniels?). I would say rent it and give a look. Or pick it up for 4 bucks somewhere.

I really loved this scene. It is a minor subplot in the movie but very touching and another real scene in many teen boys' lives - that of wanting to be even more physical with your best buddy. (Sorry if I scared ya, Tom)

Actually, blame it on Ecstasy, which both boys were on when they had this innocent, sensual moment

I just discovered another male kiss scene in searching this from The Mudge Boy (2003) - and Emile might be careful not to get typecast for certain roles.

This movie deals more with a kid Duncan Mudge (Emile Hirsch) who actually loves guys. It is set in a rural setting where it can't be all good when you ignite the homosexual fears in those closeted good-ol-boys like Perry (Tom Guiry).
