These are from my lecture notes [I'm studying media writing] and are more with regards being published in magazine, but I guess it's the same for books. Presentation Type it out... double spaced printed one side per page only good simple font (ie point 12, times new roman) Authors name and book title as header/footer on each page Attach front sheet with author name, address, book title, word count and number of pages. Failure to do so will result in it being binned asap. Submission Artists and writers handbook (don't buy, borrow from the local library) will list publishers. Send to relevant one/s with SAE and cover letter Sit and wait, could take three months maybe even longer. Other tips Don't put copyright statements on work. It's not necessary and makes you look an amature. Keep dated copies of correspondance/manuscripts. The bigger companies are ethical, they have to be (no worth the potential lawsuits) that might not be true of smaller/amature companies. Never fork out any money, they pay you, not the other way round. Rejection isn't personal, it's based on economic rather than literary reasons. Just keep going. Good luck Someone at the writers forum is bound to be helpful and have experience.
don't listen to the demon book dealer guy who's in school and taking notes to publish a book. that's bullshit. this guy's a lame little man. you want to publish a book. write the thing, edit if you like, and put it on www.booksurge.com it's five hundred bucks but you get 25 free copies and the books published in a month. then, you just get people to buy it off there. i'm writing a book right now and putting it on there. i already signed a deal. that was all there was to it. i usually just buy books off there. their best book is by far "Gifted Disabilities" by Justin Blackburn. but, yeah, you dont need to do any guidelines, just call them or email them. they got my email off me when i bought some books and made it really easy for me. oh yeah, and read "Gifted Disabilities" by justin blackburn. and read my book when its out, its called "Elevators Don't Make Good Lead Pencils" and it will be under the name Richard Cuntingsworth
