Your last idea is the best. I have learned to enjoy the experience and what it does to my body. Recognizing the effect the encounter has on me is what makes it so special. I have the same experience regarding abstaining, a little break helps but too long makes it worse. For me the magic number is two days...if I go past two days I take forever.
