I agree with you in respect of drink affecting people either making them rather nasty or very nice.
    Me?
I tend to go all soppy after a few drinks and want to be extra nice to everybody.

I used to have a Lady friend who lived with me for a few months many many many moons ago who could be the sweetest Woman one could ever meet.
And for a bonus she could **** for England! and was really good in bed!

But particularly when we went out, and after a few G and Ts she would turn very nasty, and could even be violent to the extent that I had my face scratched a couple of times.
After one such incident I changed the locks on the front door and told her that was it, this is OVER.
As usual she turned on the water taps and begged could she stay.
    But sorry.
Enough was enough was enough! :grinning:

It can be a real problem, drink has ruined many relationships. On the dozen or so domestic calls that Christina attends most weekends, 70% of them are fueled by drink or drugs. Some of them happen every week.

The guy I mentioned, was the general manager of a major London theater. One evening he stormed back from the pub and started ranting on before vomiting all over his penguin suit. Worried about what he would do next, I locked him in his office and called his drinking buddy (The manager of another theater) to get him home.
He panicked, knowing that the moment he left the building, it was against the law to operate and the 1,500 paying customers would have to be sent home. I will never forget the relief on his face when he realized that I was licences to run the building.
Having to cash up the box office, bar and sales kiosk, along with running the show made it a busy night.

My engineering staff were mortified, assuming that I would loose my job, since locking the operations manager in his office and running the public part of the theater was not part of the chief engineers job description.
However, realizing that it was me who probably saved his job, he was a bit sheepish but very grateful the following day.

All this was 40 years ago, but we still keep in touch and he still enjoys his drink. :yum:

    ??

I don't realize other people make the decisions on these matters? I should be at odds with it? What ARE you trying to get at now...

You keep acting like its either/or

    Lets do the logic flowchart:

Either the virus is going to fizzle out by itself, or its not

    If not;

You have to stay in lockdown until there is a vaccine. And the best vaccine is either going to be as useless as the flu vaccine (20% for over 65s ) or 100% effective or somewhere in between

One of those little dead ends on the flowchart is : stay in lockdown for 18 months if thats even possible, turn the whole of europe into a banana republic, for a vaccine thats going to be useless for 80% of old people, 20% of whom will die of the bat virus anyway...just 18 months, 20 million extra suicides and domestic violence, civil unrest murders later

    Madness

You better hope bat virus just fizzles out, or you guys are screwed, and more than any other continent on the planet

Bat virus is the one making the choice for you

I disagree with some details you include as fact in your flowchart, like we having to stay in lockdown until there's a proper vaccine. We will not stay in lockdown for 18 months. After all, the main reason for a lockdown is not to keep the virus out but to spread it not as fast is it naturally would go, with even more terrible short term consequences. If you think the system and healthcare personnel has problems dealing with it now, imagine how things would be if thousands and thousands more would need lifesaving treatment at the same time.
You act like a lockdown is pointless seemingly because you misinterprete the main use/reason for it.

If there is a 2nd, 3rd wave it will not only be pointless it will result in more deaths. Especially if immunity only lasts 6 months and 2nd wave you are back to everyone that survived it the first time being able to die from it again

It is nice to see that you still keep in touch from over 40 years ago wilsjane, and obviously neither you or him are ones for holding a grudge.
    And neither am I.
All this Coroner Virus thing is saying that life is too short for that sort of thing, and bye and large I have always believed in Live and let Live.

Just so long as the living ones are not people who are just pure evil.

I think that although corona-virus is a serious threat, we tend to get things out of perspective by simply looking at figures in the media.

EVERY WEEK (based on official 2018 figures)

.................12,850.... people die in the UK.
Of these. ..625........ die from pneumonia.

It seems quite likely that since a lot of the pneumonia deaths are unexplained and often quite random, viruses are involved. This suggests that these people would have died from the first virus that came along.
In addition, the 635 annual figure is very seasonal and peaks whenever their is any type of flue around.

However, these deaths would be a lot higher, if it were not for hospital care and the use of automated ventilators.
THIS IS WHERE THE PROBLEM LIES.
If larger than usual peaks overwhelm the NHS, considerably more people will die. Hence the need to slow things down.
IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT.

It will be 2 years before official figures for 2020 are published. Only then will we know how many additional people died and calculate the true impact of Corona.
Since governments never like talking about death, it is highly unlikely that even if the figures are calculated, that they will be published in the public domain.
I personally think that the figure will be considerably lower than people are imagining today

A final statistic to help seeing things in perspective
every week 500 people die or receive life changing injuries on our roads.

I understand. However, having worked in HVAC in hospitals, I found that patient contact is not needed to transmit airborne infections. I passed by everyone that had direct contact with patients, wherever they were. Same for others working to enhance the working environment. And such things cannot be underestimated in these situations. No matter where you work in such environments, hospitals are still one of the most certain places to catch an infection, whether related to the immediate crisis or not, and THAT was my point.

Not true at all, and I am speaking with knowledge from the inside! My wife is senior appointments officer at our local hospital, in laymans terms, if your doctor thinks you need to see a specialist, he writes to her, she sorts out the appointment and sends it on to you.
As they are currently suspending all non essential stuff, eventually, after she's informed everyone their appointments have been cancelled, they will shut her department. She has been told that when that happens she'll be transferred to one of the bigger city hospitals to work in any one of a number of support roles, such as, but not limited to, assisting the nursing staff in A&E, by handing out medication, or taking temperatures etc, Working on the wards, changing beds, feeding patients, handing out bedpans etc. being attached to the housekeeping department, and doing laundry, mopping floors, dealing with spillages and such.
Now while it does say in her contract that she can, if needed be moved to another hospital, it says nothing about changing her job, she's employed in Admin/Clerical, as it says in her contract, how the hell they can suddenly decide to send her doing hazardous work is beyond me, they were issued a face mask last week, then told not to wear it in public area,s, the very place where you need it, in case it alarmed the public!
Work that one out, incidentally, amongst staff and patients they had as of yesterday, 25 cases of Covid, 19 comfirmed, and one death (an elderly patient), facts which they are doing their best to keep quiet about, if the nursing staff are worried, and they are the ones trained to deal with infections and such, then I think the non clinical staff are bloody terrified!

Arguable. I rather go with the experts here than taking a chance with some sad figure's opinion from the internet

Covid was first discovered in the 1960's, and being a zoonosis mutates easily, there's been several outbreaks over the years, none however as bad as this, incidentally the 19 bit in Covid 19 relates to the year that this version first became active, i.e 2019. makes it sound a bit like Microsoft Windows and we all know how problematic that can be. lol. btw Dettol apparently kills the corona virus, it's actually mentioned on the back of the bottles.

Well worded: 'apparently' indeed, by their own unverified claims...
I guess because it kills a lot they also assume it kills this virus :p

Quite, I've seen bottles manufactured before this outbreak with that statement on them, so just because it kills one variant of the virus, whats to say it will work on the next one? The reason these things mutate, and it's generally the only reason, is to survive, it's a bit like things that become resistant to antibiotics, they get an antibiotic that works on one varient of the infection then up pops a resistant version.
I hear lots of people are eagerly awaiting the production of a vaccine for Covid, I wonder how many of them understand vaccines, ok a vaccine will if taken in time prevent you from either contracting the thing, or at least getting a nasty dose of it, it won't do any good for those already infected though will it!

    Well, you do that

"Mark Rutte denies that ‘herd immunity’ was ever an active strategy"

"With the death toll from Covid-19 standing at 1,173 as of Wednesday afternoon, and confirmation that the Dutch lockdown will continue until the end of April at least, new polling has shown significant public support for prime minister Mark Rutte and his cabinet.

The extension of the lockdown means that restaurants, bars and clubs will remain closed until April 28th, schools will be shut until May 3rd because of holidays, and sports fixtures, including premier league (Eredivisie ) football, will remain cancelled until June 1st at the soonest"

Strong support for prime minister as the Dutch lockdown continues

So.....almost another month. And remember, herd immunity was never an active strategy

Corona viruses aren't new. Some strains of corona virus cause the common cold. Covid-19 is a NEW mutation of a corona virus that previously didn't exist.

When you should be minimizing what you touch! Walk through nice big automatic doors, to be trapped into a push gate like fucking cattle!? Oh yeah, no problem, I'll just swap lap germs with every customer that has entered the fucking place!!!!

    AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

    FUCKING MORONS!!!!!!!!

Brother I feel your pain, for ages my local fast food outlet has taken cards, I went in there the other day to get some lunch, I didn't have any cash as most people aren't taking it due to the virus, "oh I'm so sorry, we only take cash" said the lady behind the counter when I offered her my card, WTF, why when everyone else is taking cards do they suddenly decide not to!
