Im startin my dreads today. I'm going to Shakedown Street (headshop) to buy a new wool tam. Then I am going to section it off, and backcomb it a bit, and most likely put some aloe in there just to mat down some hair. This is probably a bad time to start my dreads, as there is only a month left of school, and then i will most likely have to go get a job and whatnot. unless i can make bank from other means.

But I have a question. My hair poofs. When it drys, it just gets big.. I was wondering if it would be to my benefit to straighten my hair before I begin to backcomb and whatnot. I imagine it would prolly just make it harder to backcomb, but i dont know.

Anyway, This is what i'm startin out with:

nah, I wouldn't straighten...straightening makes your hair smooth and silky- kind of the opposite of what you want for dreads I'd think

    welcome to the dread journey!

ps yay for Shakedown Street! that place is awesome

wait till you have frizz before applying it. You might not get much frizz at all. If you have curly hair it'll be to your benefit to leave it curly while dreading. Curly hair dreads faster than straight hair.

    Get rid of those elastics

They're not helping in any way

The elastics are nothing but mental reassurance. after five hours of backcombing, i would like them to not fall out.

I don't think aloe will do so much, I'd just keep the tam on a lot and palm roll, if you don't want them so frizzy. Too much aloe will condition the hair and could make it soft, or slick, I think...

You obviously don't read around considering pretty much noone around here supports elastics. In fact, most are in agreement it hinders the dreading process

I heard there's nothin' shakin' on shakedown street but it used to be the heart of town.

As for the elastics, you can leave them in for a week or two with no ill effect but you'll want to make sure you get them all out before they start getting eaten by your locks.
