Like cars need four tyres replaced every so often, horses need four shoes replaced now and again.

So you take your horse to the blacksmith and he tells you that it will cost £100. (or dollars or euros, depending on what country you are from).
But he has a special offer if you order today, where he will charge you only one penny (one cent if your horse is not in the UK), for the first nail that he uses, then double it for nail two,........... and so on.

Would you take him up on his one day special offer.
Please be honest and post two answers.

Answer 1, Your first gut feeling within 30 seconds.

Answer 2, Your decision after thinking about it for a few minutes. In this answer, please mention how much you would save by accepting the special offer. :D

For the few HF members who don't own a horse, a shoe is secured by 8 nails

Yesterday I went down to the barn and fed the cat. He was happy. So were the horses lingering in the yard by the windmill - over by the creek.

They were busy nibbling on the purslane growing from the sandy soil. Chomping it down fervently as if it was their favorite food. After washing his paws, said cat sprang into action herding the horses out of the yard.

After all they are a wild herd of mostly white horses of all ages. They've been roaming these hills since WWII when a local was raising them for a food source. After war he set the last ones free into the hills.

    And here they are.

The cat loves running them around like he's a sheepdog or something.

    Anyone else have horses?

These don't know shoes and my math skills are beyond terrible.

My gut feeeling is there has to be a catch.

No savings to be had - it would cost you more.

I don't have a horse but if I did I'd pass on the deal.

If everyone lived with animals, we would not have the thuggery that we see today. Neither would people get too drunk to feed them. When people living on the streets hit rock bottom, they often adopt a stray dog as a companion and it often becomes the first step on the road to recovery.
Both our daughters love horses, but here in London keeping them costs a fortune. When Christina was on the pig farm, he did not have a driving licence, so she used one of the horses for transport.
Your cat amused me, one of ours in the past used to round up dogs. It was difficult to see who was chasing who, until they all ended up in a heap rolling on the ground together. It is a myth that dogs and cats are enemies, as anyone who has lived on a farm will know.

    30 seconds-more
    A few minutes-a lot more

So I wondered how much more and got my calculator out and found out how much more. I only went thru it once, I didn't double check the answer. I will shoe your horse for a penny for the first nail bla bla bla.:)

This problem goes back to 1256 and originated as the wheat and chessboard problem.

This would be a great deal if you were only getting one shoe done.

It depends on the breed, I think. There are definitely some that will fight, and some that will get along well.

Or just buy 4 shoes each fitted with one nail for 15p and tell the blacksmith that you are going to add the others yourself. :)

    Or just get these!

Well that didn't work. It was supposed to be a picture of buckle-on horse boots, no iron shoe needed!
