I'm sixteen and I harbor a huge longing to be in california and experience peace and love. I have found little of that in my family and I know I could be doing good in a commune somewhere, and I'd love to see the beach. What I'd like to know is what kind of dangers are there on the way.. Keep in mind haha that neither of my parents care where I am or who I'm with, so in a small way I'm blessed to be able to find my own peace and joy.
i don't think San Fran will be as special as you think, but it probably will be more grandiose for you. its not like how it was in it's primetime. there's more property lines, poverty, and just lack of spark now. But still probably more than where you are cuz there are a hella lot of liberals. UC Berkley is filled with them, then you got the gays, so the the liberal breathing room is really nice. how are you planning on getting there? or are you just getting ideas on here?
I personally think San Diego was perfect for my first trip to cali! Its a real laid back place and the people I met were very chill! I am visiting san fran next month and I have to say I am a bit excited. I know its nothing like it was in the 60's but the soul still has to be there somewhere : ) !!!!
peace and love are states of being, not states on a map. I like the Bay area, but I have people there. Solo, I find the usual suspects on the streets just as closed, and just as open, as Oklahoma City, Dallas, Denver, London, Mexico City, Vancouver, Columbia SC, Atlanta, Portland OR, etc etc
my impression of san fran was that it was a bit yuppie....its still a beautiful city, of course, but a lot of it is very upscale and urban. i think the whole hippie vibe died out with the 60s. i live in the bible belt, and when I was your age all I wanted to do was leave, go to san francisco or some other hippie haven. I didnt think i would ever find what I needed here.... but i've been lucky to find a large group of friends that view life through the same eyes as me, and now I dont think i'll leave unless we all leave as a group. As druminmama said, peace and love are states of being
Did you go to the haight? Its still quite hippie there but it feels definitely like the remanants or fall out of the culture as its a bit rundown. There are still lots of raves, art exhibits and hippie idealism. That's the amazing thing about sf to me in parts you got urban upscale business centers, then there are very ethnic centered parts like Chinatown, clubs and nightlife, then hippie locations like the haight, its a very diverse place I wouldn't care to live in sf but its probably my favorite city in California.
If you're going to San Fransisco be sure to cover your ass too "Did he really just say that?" "I think he did!" "What a prick!"
True! I went to a rave in San fracisco on new years 2 years ago and took public transportation there. When I got off Bart (the subway) I walked in the opposite direction of the rave and straight into this gay village. They are certainly a festive bunch to say the least...
The first time around I wrote the viewer dialogue as; "Did he really just say that?" "I think he did" "What an asshole!" But I was afraid people would get the wrong idea :sifone:
"...Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting — on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . . So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark — that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." -hunter S. thompson
I did go to the haight, but just for a couple of hours during the day and all we did was walk down the street and go in a couple of shops, I couldn't really get a true sense of the vibe. I only spent a day in san fran, well a day and a night but i was in the hotel room by midnight because i had a 6 oclock flight out the next morning. I really didn't spend enough time there to get a real feel of the city, just long enough to notice how beautiful it is. I was surprised because I expected to see a lot of diversity and I didn't, but i only got to see a small portion of the city too...I would like to go back and spend at least a week there.
Hahaha I love California, but Babylon is Babylon... And the recession really fucked shit up in this neck of the woods...
we put flowers in our hair on the way to san fran and got a ride all the way from arcata! (Northern california is what it's all about)
