From the same place you get spirits, ghosts, dragons and the transporter beam. The human imagination! They are from fictional stories of supernaturally powerful men. Have you ever dreamt you could fly? Now make up a story about a super powerful man who could fly. Humans were making up these stories before they leaned to write.
people get the idea because they want there to be something so they don't have to be responsible for themselves. i really do think something, lots of things greater then ourselves, and lots of things strainger then we can immagine, actually do exist. it's what people baselessly coerce themselves and each other into believing they know about it that i have to take with a very large grain of salt. i disagree equally with those who say there can't be a god just as much as with those who say there has to be. i've experienced something that seems to think its a god, and being too big to arm wrestle over the seating arraingements and wishing us no particular harm is good enough for me. others can split their own hairs over whether anything is infallable or needs to be. =^^= .../\...
Nice point. I believe man created god in man's image. Personally, I don't feel the need to debate whether or not there is a god because how does that help us live a spiritual life? Peace and love
Buddha is the only prophet who said, "I do not care to know your various theories about God. What is the use of discussing all subtle doctrines of the soul? Do good and be good. And this will take you to freedom and to whatever truth there is ". ---Swami Vivekananda
the traditional western judeo-christian-islmaic god is probably a remnant of the infantile perception of the father (the all-knowing, all-providing great beard in the sky). other ancient "pagan" religions usually used gods to fill in the gaps of our understanding. in the case of the greeks their gods were basically super-human entities that preternaturally were the universe (the actions of the gods had an effect on the observable world, but not in a controlling way, they didn't decide to kill the earth for half the year, but because persephone is in hades, her moms mourns her and everything dies ((winter))). I like you, you have good questions...
I don't think that the popular ideas of God are the same as the ideas of God that inspired all the old religious stories. It is because of the misinterpretation of metaphors. When you say 'God is just an idea people have because they can't take responsibility for their own lives', the idea you have of God ain't necessarily the same as that someone elses idea of God so how do you know? especially if you claim not to believe in God. If you say you don't believe in God, all that means is that what you think is God doesn't exist. it doesn't mean that God actually doesn't exist. It could be that you just don't understand what God is.
It's all just a product of the human imagination. I don't buy into it...not for one second. I once got into a rather nasty conversation with this Pakistani man who, once he found out I didn't have a religion, became hostile and kept asking what my problem was... and I was like I don't have a problem. Then he finally said, "maybe your problem is you don't have a religion", and I'm like "No, I'm fine with not having a religion.", then he said "your problem is is that you don't have a religion", then I said, "No you're the one who has a problem with me no having a religion, I'm cool with it I don't have a problem". Then he kept sending me links to online Quran's and shit. I just fucking hate people who are like that. It makes me want to puke. Reminds me of those damn Jehovah's Witnesses!!! Damn them all. Just say no to God and Religion and all that crap.... Peace.
QUOTE=myself]...where do people even get the idea?[/QUOTE] from the same place the idea of gods' existence comes from but only with a different frame of reference.
Ok my fellow bretheren, here is an excersise for you all. Go to the store, and buy a note book. Every night for as many days as necessary, I want everyone to write down what came into your experience, and what you thought and how you felt about them. I'm not talking DEAR DIARY. NO I'm talking an inventory. example: I spilled coffee on my lap. I hated it, I wanted to smash the cup with a hammer. You don't need to record everything just the highlights ... At some point in time you are going to have to come a very alarming conclusion my freinds. What is manifesting itself into your reality is a direct and proportinate, measurable response and result to all your emotions and thoughts. NO EXCEPTIONS. This is an observable FACT, not FICTION. It's not a delusion, or an illusion. Or an over active imagination. No, sorry, ... It's REALITY. So I ask the orginal author, why is it if I sit down tonight, and visualize myself flying with wings on my back tonight, and really feel happy doing so... why should I feel unhappy when I know tomorow I will pick up news paper and see an opportunity to go para-sailing for free? (Or something similar will manifest itself into my reality)... Why should it be necessary for me to bend the laws of time and space to be happy? I am getting what I truly desired, am I not? The wings are just a perception of one way it could be, and the rest is Sleight of Hand my friend. Now ... once you have come to this enlightenment... how far down the rabbit hole of your own reality do you want to go?
We don't always feel reality to be our thought, we desire and create exceptions. We like to rest after creating.
Wow, it's amazing how so many people must desire to be poverty stricken, starving and oppressed. Millions of people are drinking filthy contaminated water, suffering and dying from terrible illnesses but if I get an opportunity to go sky diving next week it must be an act of God.
The idea of God as a comfort only is what leads people to think How can there be a God when there is so much suffering in this world? But the reality is that life is suffering no matter how great you are or how rich or how poor you will always suffer. And when we turn to God and ask Why me? we are truly blind to reality. India is extremley poor and starving, yet it is the Mother land of spirituality. They dont ask, Why me? (well, some do obviously) but rather they turn off their minds and float downstream.
You bet your bottom dollar it is. I said I would pick on you no further in the other thread... so I'm going to leave it at that. *nods*
Relayer: Sometimes Not always. I despise religion for its heaving doctrines of commiseration. Union in misery-- why teach it?
So, you say life is misery, sometimes? Do you not see that behind every fuitful pleasure of material nature pain closely follows?
You would, when absorbed in gratifying your senses. If you cant stand to deal with that which does not conform to your ego, yes, you can expect much ups and downs throught your life.
