I was admiring a cactus I recently purchased and I noticed that it appeared similar to those commonly discussed here. I am new to cactus as I usually keep hanging plants, purple wandering jews, pothos and such. Would anyone care to take a stab at IDing this for me?
Im no expert (actually, far from one) but it looks like a cereus peruvianus to me... hopefully somebody who knows for sure can tell you.
If it is cereus peruvianus, it does not contain mescaline. It is still a very beautiful cactus though
San Pedro and Peruvian Torch cacti are both very common mescaline bearing cacti. They are not illegal to purchase and grow in the US as long as you are not ingesting them. Try searching around the internet, there are a lot of sites that sell cuttings which you could easily root and grow at home. Also, you can check local nurseries around where you live. Often times, they will carry them as they are used in landscaping. Or you could try to find a cactus enthusiast. They would be able to help you, and they might even have a few peyote (which are illegal).
Well, my consolation is that the temptation to cut it has been removed. I bought it for the purpose of admiring it and to learn more about cactus, so I can do that now without wrestling with the idea of harvesting my prickly friend.
yup. definately a cereus. good eye pedal. these are commonly confused with trichocereus cacti like san pedro/p. torch. nurseries, home improvement stores, internet vendors all sell san pedro. even head shops(quasi-legally) sell dried cactus sometimes.
