it was almost half these enormous yellow cedars (most of the forest is hemlock, which is kind of blah). i had an extra long bar today (36) and i was taking out gigantic trees (50 or 60 meters high, some of them).

i don't know how familiar most of you are with trees, but yellow cedars smell amazing when you cut them. and when they're enormous, you feel so powerful taking them out, its pretty great. i fucked up two of my blocks, though.

most of the trees were pretty worthless though. this whole forest decided to grow crooked (makes it safer for me tho)

    That's really sad, actually.

I think I would cry if I had to cut those down like that...:(

    eh... they're just trees.

there is a fucking million of them here, and the entire area were surveying is being bulldozed and benched in the next 5 years.

hell, its the world's biggest temperate rain forest.

Trees create oxygen for us...as well as being home to many species of animals. But I guess when you're a selfish human, you don't think about that, huh?

what the fuck do you think your house is built with?

and trust me, bc is a huge carbon dioxide sink. we have trees to waste. michigan, well, not so much.

Not cedar trees, I can guarantee you that. Some of those trees you were cutting down were HUNDREDS maybe even THOUSANDS of years old...You cannot return those forests to the same condition as when you cut them down...at least not for a hundred or so years.

And BTW, have you ever been to Michigan? Most of the lower peninsula as well as ALL of the upper peninsula is National Forest Land...so I'm not sure what you're talking about Michigan not having a whole lot of trees. Not that that makes much of a difference.

But as long as it puts money in your pocket to consume more shit...more power to ya

you really think michigan has a higher tree to person ratio than BC?

and yes, there is a shitload of cedar around.

LOL I didn't say that. But we do have a lot of tree cover...not sure what the ratio is...but that's not the point here...

Bottom line...there are probably hundreds of thousands of douchebag loggers out there doing the same thing you are...cutting down trees everyday multiplied by the amount of loggers? It spells trouble however you look at it. But...when you don't have a compassionate bone in your body...then you probably don't give a flying fuck anyway.

first of all, i'm not logging. i'm cutting surveying lines. secondly, people need wood - what the hell is your house made with?. third, in northern bc, it is pretty much pure forest with little towns dotting the way. there is no conservation problem (minus salmon of course, but that is overfished by alaskans anyay) - we have shitloads of every animals that are nearly extinct in most of the united states which was formerly their habitat (ie: wolves, black and grizzly bears, bald eagles, etc). don't get all high and mighty on me.

HIgh and mighty? No, I'm not. I'm an environmental advocate...and studying it in school. I know the consequences of deforestation...take the US as a mere example. So, just because BC is pure forested doesn't mean you can just go in and cut trees down with no consequences. Why do you think those animals are there in the first place? Because there's thick forestation that isn't fragmented. Once you get the fragmentation up there like you have in the US...the same thing is going to happen. Look to the future, not just what's going on now. Specifically when you look at it from an environmental standpoint.

also, to put your ottawa national forest service into perspective - it is 4000 square kilometres. bc has 13000 square kilometres of protected forest, and that is rather inconsequential compared to how much forest is actually here.

they don't have separation. its all cut blocks. with fairly strict reforesting codes.

but you are being high and mighty and bashing loggers, whereas you go to school (consuming shitloads of paper (made from softwood)) and sitting there on a computer made of plastic that won't decompose for thousands of years and burning power that probably comes from either an oil-burning powerplant.

Oh who's high and mighty now? Give me a break...in America...the amount of forestation in Michigan is pretty substantial...I don't really give two shits about how many square kilometers are in BC or anywhere else...if you cut down trees...there are consequences...regardless of how inconsequential or insignificant you think it might be.

Whatever, go cut down your trees merely to put money in your pocket...whatever makes you feel good.

Softwood certainly grows faster than hardwoods (which cedar is)...and luckily I use recycled notebook paper and I VERY rarely print anything out...I take notes (it helps me remember things better).

And yeah I sit here on a computer...and so are you. so what's your point? Oh yeah, you have no point now, which is why you're bringing other things in the mix...suit yourself. LOL

I know what I stand for...you obviously don't stand for a damn thing.

I would say MOST of the trees cut down in BC are replanted... within the year, if not immediately. At least that is the way it is here

At least one seedling is planted for every tree taken, only certain areas can be cut and clear cutting has all but been abolished.... but most of our trees go to a pulp mill. Also, within the last 20 years, tree farms have sprung up.. trees grown for the purpose of cutting them.

In most places where they are cutting trees for lumber, the methods have changed. We aren't big on deforestation either!

The problem is...the hardwoods, like cedars, grow much slower than softwoods, like pine. It will take hundreds, sometimes thousands of years for the tree to REALLY be replaced (as in size). Some of these larger trees are homes to certain animals that live ONLY in that size tree...when you cut them down...where are they to go?

There is still clearcutting going on in BC...in fact, Victoria's Secret is notorious for clear cutting boreal forests to print their catalogues on...

A lot of those hardwoods have now been protected. Not all of them, but there are large, huge areas of BC where EVERYTHING from the trees to the beetles are protected. You can't sneeze in those forests without getting a fine!

I am very pro-trees, and anti-deforestation.... but the Canadian government has made HUGE strides in the last 20 some years to protect our natural resources. At least there are protected areas now, clearcutting has been drastically reduced and replanting is automatic.

Hopefully things will continue to get better!

That being said... the lumber industry in Western Canada alone employs like a million people... so we can't expect it to change overnight without crippling the economy.

    i'm cutting survey lines.

and i was referring to financially - if they aren't growing almost perfectly vertically, they aren't really worth logging.
